My wife and I are visiting New York City next month and would like to use Apple Pay for the subways. I am not clear about using the OMNY readers in the subway stations. We will probably only ride the subways 2-3 times. Must I first set up an OMNY account before we can use Apple Pay at the OMNY readers? or can we simply walk up, tap our phones, and be on our way, without first setting up an account. Thanks.

No registration necessary, just tap and go. I sometimes have to tap twice or more with my iphone. You can set up an OMNY account if you wish, but I can't see the purpose on a short visit.

I would advise caution using OMNY with applications like Apple Pay because it doesn't always work. I have seen people stuck at the turnstiles because the system won't recognize the payment method. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it will work once but not for the second fare.

Many wind up buying a MetroCard.

Hopefully you'll have better luck.

Don't forget you can also just tap a contactless credit card.
