Redwood National Park

Diana,
I went to Redwood National Park about three years ago and found it to be a fun experience. I live on the East Coast of the US, so the sheer size of the trees - truly massive - really surprised me. It's also a nice hike down to the big trees....if my memory serves me correctly it's about three miles, though a lot of it is pretty steep both ways. The trees themselves are next to a stream....I hiked down the stream a ways and found a nice little swimming hole to cool off in.
I was camping at the time, so I can't really recommend a place to stay (finding camping around the park without planning in advance was a nightmare, at least when I went in August), though I imagine you'll be able to find a place that meets your price range around the Park rather than in San Francisco. You might want to check with some chambers of commerce around there; Eureka, Arcata and Klamath are (relatively) local towns.

I just reread your e-mail.
I don't know how long you will be in SF, but the drive to Redwood will be about 8 hours if you go on Highway 101.
Personally, I would head east and visit the Big Trees State park on highway 4 since it is much closer. You go through the Sierra Foothills on your way and there are many side trips available. The redwoods there are amazing truly huge, even for those of us who are used to redwoods.

As mentioned above, the Avenue of the Giants is very pretty. The park offers several trails and a long stretch of trees. If you just want to see redwoods the closer alternatives include Humbolt Redwoods State Park to the north, the small and crowded Muir Woods just over the Golden Gate, Big Basin State Park to the south of the city, and Calavaras Big Trees State Park to the east (also a long way).

A few more Redwood groves close to SF.
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in the Santa Cruz mountains just off of highway 9. Have brunch at the Brook Room in the Brookdale Lodge in Brokkdale (Sunday).Unbelievable dining room with a babling brook running through the center of it. Very cool. Aprox 65 miles South from SF.
Armstrong Woods in Gurneville. Near Santa Rosa on Highway 116. Great river community in Guerneville and the park has a nice grove. Same distance but north on 101.
And if you really don't want to travel far from SF go to Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland hills (East Bay) depending on the time of year there is no charge to enter and it has some great hiking trails including a pretty river trail flanked by a redwood grove. Park is on Redwood Road off of Hwy 13 or 580.
Just accross the Bay Bridge.
Enjoy
