Red Roof Inn area safe?
I am planning a trip to NY with my two daughters (ages 19 and 24). As we are on a strict budget, I'm looking at staying at the Red Roof Inn. Is that a safe area for three women? We've never been to NYC before and want to see a Broadway show (probably Gypsy) and just some general sightseeing. Is this a central place to stay? Any ideas of some fun "free" things we can do? Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

IMO, the hotel (32 and B'way) is in a great and very safe location. You are close to the Empire State Building and walkable to great shopping.
Take a look at the 3-day itinerary which Fodor's has put together on this site. Click on Destinations above, then scroll down to New York. That should give you lots of ideas. Not to many "free" things in New York except for the best free theatre of all: the streets and the great people watching. Most museums require a entrance fee, but these are well worth it. The Public Library and Bryant Park are worth a look, and all of Central Park is of course free as well.

from the MTA website: 'The fare for passengers, which had been 50 cents for a round trip between St. George, Staten Island, and the Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan, was eliminated in 1997. The fare for vehicles remains at $3.'

You didn't mention when you will be here, but I can add a few things for your trip.
Some of the museums have a "free" day, so you might check when that is, the Met used to be on Tuesdays but not sure about that, but it is a suggested donation of $12, but you can pay what you wish.
I would suggest going to sidewalk.com for more info and pick up a New York Magazine for lots more goings on in the city.
The Red Roof Inn is in Little Korea and most of the stores and restaurants are open 24/7 or very late at night so there are always people on the street.
As someone else mentioned you are right around the corner from the Empire State Building and VERY close to lots of shops. Your girls will enjoy H&M, Daffy's and Conway (good cheap clothing for the summer there), Victoria's Secret and of course Macy's. There's also an Old Navy and a Sephora (spelling?) for an amazing display of cosmetics.
There are not alot of good restaurants in the area, mainly fast food, a Starbucks or two, lots of Delis. For some nicer restaurants head east to 3rd Ave or further uptown toward 42nd St.
I would also get a Zagat for information on restaurants as you wander about town.
Have a great time and enjoy the city.

I have stayed at the RRI It is a fairly new property, the people are friendly, the rooms are small but clean. Nice 20" TV's, free breakfast lounge area. Near Macy's and Empire State Bldg.. Business block that gets quite at night, except for the Kariokee Bars! Great, cheap eats at 32nd and Madison, Bella Napoli Italian
Just be aware of your surroundings. That goes for staying at the Plaza Hotel as well!!
