Re: Amtrak, Hilton Head
With such uncertainty w/ flights, specials, etc. am heading out on Amtrak for an 8 hour train ride- any suggestions out there? Haven't been on a train for 20 years! Destination is Hilton Head for a little girl's R&R and golf- Sorry Stacy- can't watch CNN & cry any more- Anyone know any great restaurants, music, etc? Set with tee times, but would appreciate suggestions for evenings. Thanks!

Many many years ago (I was 13 years old at the time) I took the train all the way from Washington DC to go to Fripp Island, not too far from Hilton Head. We took sleepers and got off at Yemmassee...I remember it was quite exciting with my brother in the upper bunk (we'd whisper: do you think we're out of Virginia yet? I think we fell asleep before we left VA), and then being woken by a conductor at about 5am in Yemmassee. My uncle, who lived in Beaufort, SC, picked us up at the station, so I have no idea about transport (renting a car, etc...). Sorry I didn't have much in the way of suggestions there, but do have fun!

Almost 25 years ago, I had a job in one city and would catch the Amtrak to my parents' home ~100 miles away. Faster and more comfortable than a bus. Would rather drive or fly today.
Remember, on the rails, you're going behind everything. Quite a different view. One thing I really liked was the car with the domed glass roof. Of course, back then, I made sure I checked out every available car on the train. Have fun. It'll be different if nothing else.
