My cousin is on the board of the Coney Island Freak Show and the Mermaid Parade. And he has birthdays and other events at the Coney Island Freak Show. And while there are some new rides, Surf Avenue is still basically desolate. There is the original Nathan's, NYC aquarium, and the ballpark where a Mets minor league plays a short season and is a spectacular place to see a game.

Where Brighton Beach meets Coney Island there is a public handball court where a number of national champions have come from and on weekends hundreds of dollars exhange hands.

Coney Island from the begining was hocky tonk and on a hot July 4th, there could be a million people on the beach.

A walk on the boardwalk could take to you Brighton Beach where there are Russian and Ukranian restuarants and stores.

Past Brighton Beach is Manhattan Beach were over a hundred years ago there was a railroad spur and Diamond Jim Brady and others would spend their summers. There were also three race tracks in the area. ALthough Manhattan Beach is harder to reach it is where many families go. There is a home in Manhattan Beach now on sale for about $10 million.

I think you will be fine walking on the Brooklyn Bridge. Not scary but noisy from the traffic on the level below the walkway.

I personally preferred the Metropolitan to Natural History, as a child. I feel the same as an adult. The Met will be free for a ten year old. and even though there is a suggested adult admission of, I think $20 per person, the museum is required to accept what you pay, so long as you pay something. This enables those on a tight budget to visit one of the greatest museums in the world. If you need a break and a breathe of fresh air go up to the roof garden.. not scary either as you really cant look straight over the side of the building and there are benches to sit on. Right near the museum on fifth avenue there is a playground, and central park is right there too. The central park zoo is nearby as well.. a short bus ride down 5th avenue..or a longer stroll.

The Brooklyn Museum is right next door to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.. The museum is free the first Sat. of each month and is open in the evenings.

An article from today's NYT which profiles one Tony Disco, a 78 year old Brooklyn Barber who can be found dancing on the Coney Island boardwalk most weekends.
