Quick, where to stay, eat in Atlanta?
My husband just found out he has to go to Atlanta next week for a few days and since the kids are in camp, I thought I'd join him. First, is it a worthwhile trip for me? (he will only be able to join me in the evenings). Also, whats the best downtown hotel and does anyone have good, recent restaurant recommendations? Thanks!

Ick, blech, phooey! Why start this crap again? Rev. Jackson--- for all you know, this is someone else entirely. The name "Curious" isn't exactly an original one! "Curious"--- hang in there, I'm sure someone will post the answers you're looking for. In the meantime, you might try a text search on Atlanta; there's been a lot of information already posted.

Yes, that must be it! They decided to rendevous in Atlanta and take me along just to make it more exciting!! In fact, he's so cunning that he's convinced his boss and and 2 coworkers to go along with the whole torrid affair! What a brilliant cover-up! Jesse, or Oakland hurry up because the afternoon soaps are starting and you don't want to miss them since they are obviously your inspiration!

Step back a bit and relax "why".
I was being facetious.
Ms Oaktown Traveler just replied to "curious" on another thread after "curious" made a wry comment about 'the other woman'.
It's a joke, of course, and Ms curious seems to have risen above all the name calling from the previous insult-laden debate about infidelity.
As for your question, curious, the downtown hotels are not among the best Atlanta has to offer (Four Seasons just a bit north of downtown is the reigning top property), but the downtown Ritz is pretty good. The downtown hotels are mostly business oriented places, many with good but not exceptional accomodations and food.
The FS is worth the short drive IMO, but if your husband is locked in, that's a moot point.

I can recommend a couple good restaurants downtown. First is Daley's. A Steakhouse but also serves good seafood and has the BEST desserts ever! It's near Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood. Another good restaurant is American Grille. It's located in one of the hotels, I just can't remember which one. I've stayed in almost all the hotels downtown on business and like the Hyatt. The Hilton's good too for the price. If you can make it out of downtown may I reommend The 1848 House. Good food in a beautiful, historical house.

The Four Seasons might be your best bet. It's near downtown(he could ride the Marta train from the Arts Center Station), but it's in the Midtown area where there are more places for you to visit. The High Museum is a very short walk from the Four Seasons and they currenty have a show of Michaelangelo drawings. Restaurants in the area of the Four Seasons include South City Kitchen for upscale southern cuisine in an attractive, contempory setting, Vickery's for something casual, Cherry a new bistro, and Tamarind for excellent Thai food.

Thanks everyone. My husband had his travel dept. check the Four Seasons and the Ritz Carlton and the corporate rate was $ 265 at 4 seasons and $ 450 at the Ritz Carlton, so the Four Seasons it is! I't was my first choice anyway. Is it me or do the corporate rates seem high? Maybe the travel departments should look into the discount hotel sites!

It's all relative (as to whether corporate rates are high or not).
Atlanta is not especially expensive for business travel; you'll not likely find a corporate rate as low as $265 at the 4S in Chicago or NYC or the new one in SF. The Ritz Carlton rate he was quoted is almost insulting, unless it was for a suite or with a good location on the Club Floor.
Another thing to consider, is that business travel is down precipitously the past 6 months. Due to shrinking corporate profits in most areas, travel has been scaled back and business hotels have been hit hard. Leisure travel, oddly enough, has hardly changed in terms of total dollars being spent on a monthly basis.
The 4S in Atlanta is located a bit eccentrically in that it's not downtown in the business core, and it's not in Buckhead, the other large upscale commercial hub. So perhaps the management at 4S is competing more aggressively for business $$ by lowering rates.
Hope you have a great time curious.
(Should I stop holding my breath waiting for Oaktown Traveler to retract that statement about all husbands having mistresses?)

I disagree with the earlier post. The 4 Seasons is in a very good location as far as eating at the arts. South City Kitchen and restaurants along the Crescent Ave corridor, which is about a block away from the 4 Seasons are very good. There are some pretty good nightclubs and bars along the way too. The 4 season has a great restaurant in the hotel called Park 75. If 4S is a little too expensive you may want to try the Sheraton Colony Square on 14th, which is maybe two or three blocks away from the Four Seasons and Crescent. The High Museum and the Woodruff Arts Center are very close to those locations also. If you have a car, you won't be very far from downtown or just take MARTA (our public transport)which is also not far from those two hotels.

No one criticized the location of the Four Seasons for proximity to restaurants or the arts. The comment was that the location was not in the same primary business clusters (downtown and Buckhead) that the other business oriented and luxury hotels are in.
