Quick trip to Spokane, WA and Missoula, MT

Two nice cities in the western USA. Flew into Spokane on Alaska, drove with a relative to Missoula, with stop at the National Bison Range (we took the scenic route). Flew out of Missoula, also on Alaska. Alaska long haul flight very comfortable.

Spokane: eat excellent pastry at Madeleine's but be ready to wait in line like NYC! eat Szechuan at Gordy's on South Hill. Walk in Manito Park. Go to the White Elephant for not only the most jam-packed toy department but also the corner where they are still selling souvenirs from the 1974 World's Fair (???!!!). Buy books at Auntie's which is as good as any bookstore in Boston/Cambridge (my home town), if not as big. Visit the perfect restoration of the 1914 Historic Davenport--and view the photos from the archives for special fun. Sneak around and view the ballrooms on 2nd floor--there are some stunners. The Centennial Trail is beautiful in Spring with a lot of snow melt in the river. Pretty views of snow-capped Mt. Spokane, too.
Missoula: Stealth foody town. I had a gyro at the American Legion post that was as good as any gyro I've ever had. Better, in fact. Fancy food at the Red Bird--chili coconut fish soup FTW with music and no cover charge. Bread and coffee from Le Pain Outre. Edamame hummus from Good Food Store. Pizza rescue at the Bridge (meaning Easterner dying for pizza after ten days without). Salad there great too. Shop at Noteworthy Press & Paper for locally produced gifts of great charm and hit another great indie book store at Shakespeare & Co. National Bison Range outside Missoula with baby bison and antelope. Cuties!Mountains with snow in both places. Always a beautiful sight.
Go a little out of town and look at the stars from the hood of your car (next time bring a star chart). Look for Arrowleaf Balsamroot this time of year. Fields of yellow gold!

Thanks for the reminder about the Davenport. Spokane '74 was the only World's Fair I went to. It was my first time seeing an IMAX film and the first time I saw one of the Goodyear blimps within a mile.
On one of my Amtrak trips, I took the Empire Builder east to Chicago. The two sections of the train join in Spokane after midnight every night.
