gail, I reread goalonenow51's message.
He stated that " seems like there is a substantial financial penalty for travelling alone, especially on cruises".
I did not read that as he desired to only go on a cruise.
He asked for some advise.
And consequently I did.
Cruises are not good deals for single travlers.
So, I was attempting to give him some "food for thought"
I am not knowledgable about not being charged a "single supplement" for a cruise.
Am aware, as sognatrice2 stated, that some cruises offer a passenger a choice to share a room with a stranger.
That would not be something I would want.
And sognatrice2 stated she thought that some cruises are for singles. Not famaliar with those either.
Just putting in my two cents worth on how to travel without paying a single penalty.

Question about Outrigger Reef in Oahu

If you travel on your own, you buy your own airline ticket, get your own hotel room, pay your own restaurant bill, buy your own subway ticket, museum ticket etc. That way you do not pay a "single supplement".
Bet you will have more fun too, and meet interesting people on your trips.

I will be going to Hawaii next month and will be staying at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach hotel in Oahu. I have seen pictures of it and it looks nice. Can anyone who has actually stayed there tell me about it? Is it as nice as it looks on its pictures? Also has any been to Nick's Fishmarket? It's located in the Waikiki Gateway hotel.

I was there 3 yrs ago, and it is a nice hotel. Think along the lines of a Holiday Inn or Radisson. The rooms are snug, but all have balconies. Direct access to the beach, lobby is partially open air. live music in the lobby. Don't expect, it was nice, just don't expect luxury.

All this Hawaiian prattle reminds me of mindless spectator sports and probably attracts the same mindless zombies!

Hi Valisha, We have not stayed at the Outrigger Reef, but know people who have and we, ourselves, have gone there for dinner several times. They have a great restaurant where you grill your own steaks and they are great. Don't know what the rooms are like, but it is a lovely hotel and I am sure you will like it. Some people on here have become such snobs.

Valisha, we just stayed there this past Jan., had suite facing the ocean and we enjoyed it. I think you'll be satisfied. As Anthony said, nice but not luxurious. It's within walking distance to Nick's as well as other restaurants, including one of our favorites, a little Italian cafe called Arancino's, very European setting, on Beachwalk. Good food, usually hard to get in tho but don't be put off by line of people.
