You will love Portsmouth. There's dozens of restaurants in the downtown area. The "decks" by the water are fun, the Ferry Landing (seafood) and Poco's (Mexican) have decent food, although you go more for the atmosphere. Other recs would be Jumpin' Jay's Seafood, Molly Malone's and the Metro. if you'll be there on a Sunday, go to Saunders at Rye Harbor for their 3pm reggae band and have drinks by the water.

While in Portsmouth, you might want to visit Strawberry Banke, take a harbor cruise or ride to the Isles of Shoals, wander the Fuller Gardens on Rt 1A Rye, walk the trails at the Seacoast Science Center also in Rye, cross the river to the Kittery outlets, take in a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse, or visit Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, or Kennebunkport. Boston is about an hour away, as would be Portland, Maine or Concord/Manchester, NH. You could make a day trip over to Shaker Village in Canterbury, or even into the White Mountains, albeit a long day trip.
I agree with Wyatt's restaurant suggestions, esp Jumpin Jay's and Metro. I also like Currents Med Bistro for lunch.
Have fun!
