Portland, OR publications?
Are there any weekly or monthly magazines for Portland, OR or the region? My sister is moving there next summer and for Christmas I wanted to give her a subscription to one so she can keep up with what's going on, what events are upcoming, local interest stories, etc.
I have not had any luck searching online, so if you know of one and they have a web site, please list it. My second choice is to give her a book about Portland (things to do, places to go, etc), so recommendations for that are welcome as well.
Much thanks, and happy holidays everyone!

While it is free & you have to actually pick it up from one of the many locations it is distributed at Willamette Week is a great source for current things to do in the Willamette Valley. www.wweek.com You may just want to let you sister know about while you look for other resources as well.

Willamette Week is the best guide that I know for local events. But there also is Oregon Magazine. Here's the website: http://oregonmag.com
Border's also has the best in store choices for travel related books. You might want to pick her up the latest edition of Zagats or Best Places in Portland. Or if she likes hiking, there are some good guide books for local trails.

www.wweek.com
www.oregonlive.com (Oregonian stories)
www.portlandtribune.com
www.portlandmercury.com
www.kxl.com
www.channel6000.com (KOIN TV)
She can listen to a few of the radio stations on the web also - e.g.
www.kpam.com and www.kxl.com .
Powell's Travel Books at Pioneer Courthouse Square has a great selection of travel books; the main Powell's on Burnside has a nice selection also.

Unfortunately, Portland doesn't have a magazine comparable to the self-named mags for Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, etc. Oregon Mag is not in the same class; it's a mouthpiece for local conservatives and not really a magazine about Portland. Willamette Week is definitely left-leaning in its editorial content but it does have more listings about what's going on in Portland during the week. (It's also more oriented toward the under-30 crowd.)
The best bet is to get her a subscription to Sunset magazine and makes sure she gets the Pacific Northwest edition (Sunset has several versions; one for the Southwest, one for the Rocky Mountains, one for the Pacific NW, etc.).
In addition to the web sites listed, check the www.katu.com (a local tv station) for local news and to look at various Portland area web cams. I used to go to www.kgw.com but they now make you register--and if you read their fine print, there's no privacy protection--sign up and more spam will be coming your way.

a note about kgw.com.... they do require that you register but no one says you have to tell the truth. I get very irritated so I give them junk. I am truthful about my age etc that doesn't identify me but I won't give them my name. I would feel guilty but I don't want junk or my personal information out there....
