portland hotel with parking

Hi again,

We're still working on our itinerary, but I'm trying to find a place to stay in Portland with free/cheap parking. Any recs? We will be making day trips out of the city most days. We had hoped to stay downtown, but I see most places have valet parking and fees of $23-28 per day. I have no problem staying just outside the city in a location with good access to public transit. Must be under $200 and would be nice if that includes breakfast. Any ideas?

You could stay on the east side of the Willamette River, in the Lloyd District. Parking is cheaper or perhaps free at the Holiday Inn on NE 2nd Ave (used to be free, not sure anymore). This hotel will shortly become a Crowne Plaza. A short walk to the free MAX train and a few free buses to get downtown. There's also the Doubletree which is basically in front of a MAX stop; not sure what parking costs.

You can look at travelportland.com to see if you can find any discounts. But if you really want to save money, go with Priceline.com if you are willing to commit to a non-refundable/non-changeable hotel. Bid 4-star and you will get something nice if not really nice, downtown. Yeah, you still have to pay $25 for parking and for breakfast but you save so much in the hotel rate that who cares? Check betterbidding.com but generally you can get a 4-star hotel in Portland via Priceline for under $90/night if not $60/night, depending on the season.

First of all check with Portland Visitors Assoc - most of the rooms they advertise come with free parking and breakfast

http://www.travelportland.com/

A place I stay that is convenient with parking included is the Inn at Northrup Station - its not downtown but you can easily take a trolley downtown and its in the "23 st area" which is full of restaurants and shops and a great area to stay.
Its called a "boutique" hotel and
the decorating is wild but I have stayed there a couple of times and been happy.

Thanks to both of you. I do actually plan to bid on PL and have done so before, but it is a holiday week and it may be last minute before I win a bid. I want to make a cancellable back up res. somewhere in case PL doesn't pan out.

Will check out Northrup Station!

Sunburn directed me to the travelportand.com site, and I got a great deal on the Heathman at 199$ a night WITH free parking and a continental bkfst...not a bad deal IMO...Thanks Sunburn!

I checked out travelportland.com and the fee for most of the downtown spots was $229 for room & hotel (about the same as booking directly with the hotel). We will be there on a holiday week, so things might be a bit more expensive.

But when you book directly with the hotel you dont ususally get the free parking and breakfast

also when you book through POVA you get a book of coupons which include a discount on dinners at some restaurants.

Even though we live here, we have stayed in hotels in downtown for various reasons. The last time was last fall. The Monaco (our first choice as we really like it) was booked, so we settled on the Heathman. I checked the rate at POVA with the parking/breakfast, but the hotel website had the exact same offer with the same rate.

mms, funny I checked a few days later, and the price on the POVA had jumped from 199 to 219. But sunburn is right about the discount coupons...it all helps .

I booked the Northrup Station-- it looks great! I called and got a terrific price too. $149 for the superior room with deck, breakfast and parking included. Thanks to all that suggested it!

I may still try bidding on Priceline when it closer, but now I'm not so sure cause I really think the Northrup looks like our kind of place!

Just a note about the parking at Inn@Northrup..
The hotels, such as the Monaco, have parking under the building..or attached..
The Inn has a parking lot out in the open..not a big deal but wanted to let you know.
Wherever you are in Portland, make sure nothing, nothing is in the car or showing, when you leave it parked. Stow things in the trunk or take them with you..

mms, how was the Heathman, it looks exquisite? Scarlett, my DH is quite fanatical about stuff showing in the car.

Yes, mms, how was the Heathman?

( some of us have Opinions on the Heathman lol)

Judy, every single day I would walk the dog, or walk down the street, there would be glass on the side where another car window had been smashed.

The parking police would go around the Pearl on weekends and put little notes on every cars windshield, telling them to put valuables in the truck or take them with them.

I learned that really early on when I arrived in NYC..my mom came to visit and went down to her car and everything she had in the backseat was gone..*luggage*
( Yeah, mom had forgotten about Life in the Big City lol...

Judy--It was not horrible, but I will not go back. We had hoped to get a room at the Monaco again, but it was Fashion Weel here and so it was booked. At the Heathman we had a Symphony Suite which was tiny. The sitting area had a couch, that was it. So no room to have friends over, which was the plan. The bed was comfy. The bathroom was not well maintained. Cracked tiles, lots of wear and tear showing all around. In the morning that we were leaving, about 8 am the maid came in. No knock, nothing. At a hotel of that caliber, I expect better. We had room service for our breakfast and while I am far from picky, it was not very appetizing. We drank the coffee and juice and left the rest. The valet took a long time as well.

I haven't stayed at the Heathman...a bit on the stuffy side to me .. we stayed at the Monaco..every time..
Real full suites, perfect service, fabulous big beds, big ole bathtub in a big ole bathroom...
They spoiled me. A perfect hotel.

Some people post about having stayed in the Symphony Suite and carry on about how wonderful it is, but they are really not quite a suite, as mms discovered...back when they overhauled some rooms, they gave out discounts and a few people got to stay at the Heathman for less than usual...you will hear about that a lot.
I would rather pay full price and go to the Monaco

you know, I should get a job working for Kimpton..I won't take pay, just free hotel stays lol

Fodorites, in this vein, the hub and I are planning to stay in Portland area on a weekend late in August. We're not as interested in seeing the city (sorry folks) because of time restraints, but want to do the fruit loop, Mt. Hood, Timberline Lodge over that weekend, stopping in Portland for lunch before we head to Cannon Beach on a Monday afternoon. Would there be any advantage to stay in Vancouver WA for this weekend as opposed to outskirts of Portland?Looking for a hotel in a quiet area.
Your suggestions...?

I see no advantage in staying in a chain motel in Vancouver, which I believe is all you will find.
It is not on the way to wherever you will be going..unless I am once again, lost !
