If you visit Portland, Oregon in May, most definitely bring an umbrella. You might get lucky and get a beautiful day but don't count on it.
FYI, the International Rose Test Garden (ake "The Rose Garden") may not be much in bloom in May; later is better.

Thanks, everyone for your helpful info. It sounds like we should re-think the May visit. We already have a trip planned for southern CA in August (business/vacation) so we may need to postpone our trip to Portland, OR until next summer.

August and September are certainly more likely to be better for weather in Portland but that doesn't mean May will be awful. You need to bring an umbrella even in August and September! And you could get beautiful weather in May. By then, the days will be long - certainly better than December when it gets dark at 4:30!
You simply can't predict the weather anywhere. Sometimes you just have to take a shot. I went to Hawaii in December, knowing it could be rainy, but it turned out to be gorgeous weather. You never know.
