Port Townsend & Surrounding Area
We will be in Port Townsend in June. Wondering best places to stay (with teenage son), eat and shop. Like unusual, different shops. Where else to go in surrounding area? We will be there a total of 8 days. Never have been in Northwest USA before. Thanks

Do the whole Olympic Peninsula...Don't miss Hurricane Ridge. Take the ferry...especially thru the San Juan Islands...or to Victoria. (I personally thought Victoria was too touristy) If you get a chance, take a trip to Mt. St. Helens....to actually see the massive damage is incredible! The traffic on the Peninsula is heavy and slow in the summer. Plan accordingly.

I agree with previous writer. You should definitely see Mt St. Helens and Mt. Ranier. We did enjoy Victoria and yes it is a bit touristy but isn't that what it is all about when you are going to a place that you have not been before. I believe that they call that a tourist. Go to Victoria you will enjoy it.

Wow, in eight days you can cover a lot of ground. You should visit Dungeness Spit, do some short hikes around Lake Crescent, take a drive out to Forks and walk in the Ho rain forest and go out to the ocean beaches. PT is a very nice small town. As far as shops go, you will easily be able to visit them all. Ft. Worden is a neat place to stay with older kids. They offer a variety of former military officers quarters, spartan but very comfortable. The grounds have many acres of trails, old battlements, and salt water beaches. Another choice would be the many fine bed and breakfast lodgings in town. Here's a web address for a great article on B&Bs in PT: http://www.seattletimes.com/news/tra..._19990310.html
You should also consider taking the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria B.C one day. Just walk on, car is unnecessary and a lot of trouble. Also, see the wild animal park in Squiem. Otherwise follow advice above.
