poipu beach kauai

We are going to Kauai in August with our two daughters 6 & 9. We are staying at the Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu, does anyone know if the beach there is safe for swimming that time of year. I seem to be reading conflicting reports about Poipu in summer. Also if anyone has suggestions about things to do with kids. Thanks

Deby, The beach between Kiahuna and the Sheraton was one of the nicest beaches we found on the So'side (Poipu) area. Restrooms right there, too.

The beach does drop off a bit so you may want to keep an eye on them just in case.
Good body surfing area and during whale season the whales come pretty close to shore.

What type of conflicting reports do you hear about the So'side in the summer?

Only thing I can think of is it may be sunnier than the No'shore in Princville??

You can try going about 5 mins down the road towards Spouting Horn to Beach House beach across the street from Lawai Beach Resort. Family oriented. Good swim/snorkling.

Or it might be worth the ride over to Salt Pond or Lydgate since both have nice "surf-breaks" for
snorkling/swimming, etc.
Use the highest sunscreen on all people in August!
Mahalo,
Kal

There's a protected area of Poipu Beach where little ones can play. I think it will be fine in general, unless there's some high surf days, and there is a lifeguard on duty all the time. Of course, with kids 6 & 9, I understand your concern. I was on Maui, in the emergency room, next to a cubicle where they were consoling the family of a drowning victim - have never forgotten it. Just be careful, talk to the lifeguard about conditions, and then have fun! I know, as a rule, you will find the North shore beaches calmer in summer, and it will be a little cooler and less humid up there, which is why I usually encourage people to go North in summer! But with common sense, I'm sure you'll have a great time at Poipu.

Aloha,

Lani

Mean to say, I second Kal's suggestion. Do take the kids to Lydgate Beach Park, up the coast about 15 minutes or so. It has a huge protected area just great for kids, and you don't even need to put on snorkel gear - just go to the stone wall enclosure and look down at masses of beautiful fish! Also they have a nice playground that your kids might enjoy.

Thank you both for the information. We will difinately have to go to Lydgate with the kids. Can't wait for August.
