Plymouth Rock to be put into a plywood box

While Plymouth Rock - the actual rock - is a truly silly tourist attraction - as it is just a small boulder in a sunken viewing area - the viewing area will be undergoing renovation in the Spring. As a result, the act5ual Rock will be encased in plywood to protect it from construction debris.

So Boston visitors, Plimouth Plantation will still be a worthwhile stop, but the Rock gets even more absurd. (Full story on Boston.com, which is the Boston Globe website)

I hope they just keep it in the box! It was one of the biggest disappointments - talk about a tourist trap...LOL!

Enjoy-la!

It's less than that. The story that the Separatists (they never called themselves "Pilgrims") landed at this rock is less than an urban legend; its invention didn't occur till over a century after the "fact."

Should ANYONE believe a story that is first recorded ninety years after being heard -- second-hand?
What you now see is about one-third of what was first found, and isn't even in its original location.
Seeing this obvious hoax is a triumph of tourist traps over intelligence.

Disapointment - probably, but since it doesn't cost anything to see the rock I wouldn't call it a "tourist trap."

How does the saying go,...

When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

Agree - perhaps tourist trap not the most appropriate term. But I was thinking in terms of it being an advertised draw to the town of Plymouth.

And besides the actual event being of questionable historic accuracy, does anyone actually believe that this is the actual Rock at landing point - it looks just like the rocks dug up in my town during recent sewer construction.
