This is the first time I will be visiting Cape Cod. My first choice would have been the town of Chatham, but it seems like the rates are a bit high in that area. I was hoping to keep per night rates to under $150.

I found a good rate for a B&B in Sandwich, for $115 per night. The name of the B&B is the Isaiah Jones Homestead. I would love to get feedback regarding both the B&B and the town.

I really wanted to explore the Cape, and Sandwich does not seem like the best town for that since it is so far west. However, it is fairly close to Plymouth, which might be a nice place to visit.

Is there a ferry that goes from Sandwich (or someplace nearby) to Provincetown? Will I need a reservation for this ferry? And is the town of Sandwich charming, or very touristy and congested?

I truly would appreciate any feedback I can get. If you have any recommendations for other accommoations in this price range, on the Cape, I would welcome those as well. Also, if anyone has a website where I can obtain discount accommodations and/or up to date availability, I would appreciate that as well.

Personally I think Sandwich is one of the nicest towns on the Cape. It has the Heritage Plantation which has lovely gardens, an antique car museum, an antique carousel and other displays as well. There is also the very small Sandwich Glass Museum. There are nice beaches. The Cape Cod Canal bike trail is in Sandwich. Seafood Sams is a pretty decent very casual seafood restaurant on the Canal. Christmas Tree Shop is there too if you have a hankering for gatzies. Sandwich rarely gets congested. Sandwich is also on the end of Rt 6a which winds its way up the Cape to Brewster and beyond. Rt 6a is filled with anitque shops, antique homes. Its quite a nice drive.

And the biggest benefit of Sandwich is you miss all the "off Cape" traffic on Rt 6 trying to get over the Sagamore Bridge on Sunday night because you'll already be right there.

Bennie, thanks so much for your reply. I feel much better now about staying in Sandwich. It does seem like there is more to do there than in other parts of the Cape. And the fact that we won't have to contend with alot of traffic going home is a great bonus. I guess we'll just reserve one day to take the drive along 6A from Sandwich to Chatham. It does sound like a beautiful drive.

Bennie, would you happen to know if there is a ferry, or other boat ride, leaving from the Sandwich vicinity and arriving in Provincetown? I would love to see Provincetown but I don't think my husband will enjoy driving 3-4 hours to get there from Sandwich. Also, approximately how long should the drive to Chatham take, assuming we don't make stops along the way which, of course, we will.

really shouldnt take more than an hour midweek to get to ptown. I'd make that the day trip and stop by chatham on the way back for dinner. GL

GL, I'll be in Sandwich from Friday through Monday, during Labor Day weekend. I have heard that LD weekend isn't as crowded as the rest of August. Is this true? Will the drive take much longer than an hour on Saturday?

If it will only take an hour to an hour and a half, I like your idea about making P-town the day trip and stopping in Chatham for dinner. Any suggestions for good restaurants in Chatham? By the way, I love dining outside (unless it is very buggy).

Happy - I don't know about any ferry service but agree with gyppie that the drive to Ptown is a day trip. Sandwich does have a marina on the Canal - maybe there are tours that depart from there. I know there are fishing trips - maybe there's a trip to Ptown.


Also should have mentioned earlier that in Sandwich there is the Daniel Webster Inn. Its pretty well known and regarded as a restaurant. I've never been but my mom likes it.
