Please help in choosing a hotel in DC
My husband has meetings in the large Washington Hilton. We do not plan to stay there and hope to find a hotel within walking distance (or a short cab ride) of that hotel. Looking for a nice hotel in a safe area, convenient to metro and shops/sightseeing. We have stayed at the Westin Embassy Row and liked the location, however the last time we were there the restaurant was closed down and the rooms, tho comfortable, looked like they had been neglected a bit. Any suggestions ??

I am not sure what the large Washington Hilton is... is there more than one Hilton?
Anyway. I stayed at the Capital Hilton and could walk to most major sites. If they were further, the Metro was nearby. When I stayed, I got the room on Priceline at $90 per night.
Thay may be the "large" Hilton or not... but I thought I would share it in case it wasn't because it was a very nice hotel at a very good price.

The Washington Hilton is on Connecticut Avenue, above Dupont Circle.
There are a fair number of hotels that would meet your rather broad criteria. You might start with Jury's, which is right on the Circle and therfore just across from the metro.
FYI, there is also a Courtyard Marriott almost directly across from the Washington Hilton that is pretty nice. Jury's has slightly more personality.
If the idea of a luxury B & B appeals, check out Swann House, www.swannhouse.com

I don't have anything new to add; I just want to agree with MoonGirl's recommendations. The Jurys on Dupont Circle is a great choice. Swann House is in a more residential neighborhood, but within easy walking distance of restaurants. Jurys is right in middle of it all, and much closer to the Metro than Swann House. But with either Jurys or Swann, you can walk to the Washington Hilton.
