I took my daughter to see this show. She is 13 and she loved it! I have to say that I enjoyed it, but I understand the critical reviews. The show is a lot of fun and if you can let yourself go and just say, "Entertain me for awhile" it is fine. The dialogue is not great and I don't think that the score is memorable. But the two leads are amazing! They are wonderful to watch. I don't know what will happen to this show when they leave. Also, I think your seats are very important in this theater. It is so vast that you can easily be seated too far from the stage and lose the impact of the performances. We were very lucky, I bought tickets the day it opened and we were seated about 5 rows from the stage - just about perfect. My husband now says he wants to go but the only seats I have found are either upstairs or very far back or to the side and I won't purchase those. If you have the right seats, and just go for entertainment, it will be fun.

Of course Patrick! That whole banter was silly anyway. Chalk it up to crankiness or something, doesn't matter. We are all on the same side here, something I think we tend to forget at times in our eagerness to be the one to help out. Just means that we are all generous, good hearted people, doesn't it? Too bad I am going to Candide on the 7th. Seems like us Fodorites are always like ships passing in the night.

I'm reading this book right now ("Wicked") and I can't imagine how they translated it to the stage -- it must cover about 1/100 of what is in the book! It is quite a dense story, not at all what I expected, but I'm enjoying it.
Has anyone seen the musical after reading the book? If so, what were your impressions?

Actually, I am reading the book and saw the show first. They explain most of the first few chapters in a song or two. The problem is that if you don't hear the words clearly, you may miss some detail. I was fine in the orchestra, but I have no idea how the words sounded when they drifted to the balcony. Obviously the book is more thorough and I am really enjoying it. You will find that the show just barely touches a lot of the text. For instance, there is hardly any (if any at all-don't remember) mention of her mother and her relationship with the visitor she had an affair with. That was news to me when I read the book. It might have been mentioned in a song though and I wasn't paying attention.

The ending is different - but I don't want to ruin it for anybody!

ROFL. Don't know about the Diva part, but definitely a Diehard. Seeing Sea of Tranquility tonight at the Atlantic Theater. Stars Dylan Baker. I love him. Tomorrow night I see one of the best divas (well, in my opinion), Linda Eder. The hairs on my arms stands on end when she sings Man of LaMancha.

Patrick, what else are you seeing during your spring Diva jaunt to NY?

It's a great show. The best part are the two leads. The set design is great too. You will enjoy it.

To bugswife, the only thing I've booked so far is King Lear -- we arrive in the city on closing night, and did get those tickets. And thanks to you, got our tickets for the NY Philharmonic concert of Candide. Otherwise, I'll pretty much play it by ear -- or get discount tickets about a month in advance if and when they are available. I'd like to see Twentieth Century, Jumpers, Assassins, Sly Fox, and Wonderful Town, as well as Wicked. Not sure what else.

Patrick, could you PLEASE report on King Lear after you see it? One of my favorite actors, Brent Carver, is in it. I got to know him well in the little theater town of Stratford, Canada (about three hours from my house.) Wish I could catch him in it, but can't make it. Thanks!

I have King Lear on 3/8, so will report. Sly Fox on 3/24, but might have an extra set for 3/31. Assassins I have on 4/15 (been listening to the CD in prep & sounds good) Might have 4 seats for that as well. 20th Century on 5/6 with 2 xtra seats, but you leave on the 6th, right?

I have no idea what dates you are going to be here, but I can report on some of the other stuff I am seeing between now & May 6th if you want. Stendal Syndrome w/Isabella Rossalini, Fiddler, Valhalla, Wintertime, Nothing Like a Dame (1 nt special charity), Big Bill at Mitzi Newhouse, Sweeney Todd w/Elaine Paige-State Theater, Small Tragedy, Embedded, Pardon My English, Match, & a few other small ones.

Oops sorry. My reply was to Patrick with all the theater review offers, but Maggie, you can read my report on King Lear as well : - )

I think Howard is seeing King Lear too-recall from a prior post. He may be able to report back even sooner.

bugswife, next time I hope you do a little better planning. We arrive on April 18 and depart on May 6. How come you didn't get extra tickets during that period? LOL?

By the way, when we were at Second Stage in Sept. for Living Out, I saw that Mary Louise Parker was doing something there in April. I can't seem to find anything about that. Has that been cancelled -- maybe due to her new baby??

Patrick - That would be Reckless. I am not sure what the story is with that one at the moment, but we have it on subscription so I am sure I will here something soon. Or I can ask when we are there to see Wintertime with Marsha Mason. We also just got tickets to see Sean Combs and Audra McDonald (love her!) in Raisin in the Sun.

On the Second Stage website it lists "Fired, back by popular demand". So I suspect that's something they are replacing Reckless with.

Raisin in the Sun sounds good, but we will be seeing it at Oregon Festival in July -- one raisin per season is probably enough for me. I'm on a limited diet, you know.

And on another post I mentioned Paper Mill Playhouse's production of BABY, which is a must for me. Never been there, so will do an excursion to Millburn, NJ.
