One place I do not want to return to is Supai in the western Grand Canyon. The filth, horrible nutrition, high rates of diabetes, low life expectancy, together with barefoot children running in the "streets" which are paths full of animal excrement and the animals which are unbelievably skinny -- all this is so distressing that I am hard pressed to understand how tourists can ignore all that and continue taking photos of the blue waterfalls, raving about the place. I wish I could do something about the situation for the poor pitiful children who live there, but I can't so I am not going back!

Hmmm, while I certainly have favorite places that I've visited and that I long to go back to, there is not a single destination that I would refuse to return to.

Tops on my list for return visits: Prague, Florence, Venice, Rome, Grenada, Bequia, Jamaica, New Orleans, NYC, and many more.

Bottom of my list for return visits: Germany, Austria, Barbados, Sundance, Dallas, Los Angeles. I enjoyed these places to varying degrees but didn't hear that certain siren call to draw me back again and again.

New Orleans and the french quater..

Overwhelming smell of urine, disgusting drunks and i felt as if there was an underlying satanism going on...

very uncomfortable

Don't worry, Faina, you won't have a problem being served in Albuquerque. :-)

Oh, LeeAnn, I know, I am prepared! Somebody enlighted me with the expanation that New Mexico had abandoned the bartering system in favor of sea shells which I can bring from San Francisco. I will be a good tipper. ;)

I wouldn't refuse to go anywhere unless it was dangerous or might make me sick. If I do my research and plan properly, I think I could have a good time anywhere on vacation, even if it might not be a place I would choose.

And God help anyone who can't manage to have a good time in New Orleans!!!

GoTravel Nov 9th, 2007 03:16 PM

I agree snowrooster.

BeachGirl247 Nov 9th, 2007 03:26 PM

I just can't image saying "never" to anyplace I haven't even experienced. Unless it is a place that is extremely dangerous I see no reason to say I couldn't enjoy it.

We chose a trip to Paris based solely on a special airfare online. Our expectations were very low and did not expect to like it or the people. How very wrong we were in our assumptions!! It is now on our "repeat" list as a favorite. Never say never.

"And God help anyone who can't manage to have a good time in New Orleans!!!"

...or Paris!!! Yikes.

Anywhere you have to have injections!!!!

India/China/most asian countries just do not appeal.

And never fancied the middle east either...

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. I wouldn't trust them to handle my special celebration. Beware!

So many thoughts on so many places...this will stir the pot.

Addressing the OP on places I refuse to go:

NYC, Boston and most everywhere on the east coast. I have strong opinions on abrasive personalities- which I have found to be pervasive there.

Mexico. I've tried it, much to my regret.

France, for political and social reasons.

Eastern Europe. It looks too dark to me.

Africa, India and for that matter most of Asia. I did, though, enjoy Japan.

Also, a lot of the U.S. southeast and midwest. I will with-hold commentary.

L.A., it's another world.

Antarctica. I don't like cold.

I have friends relocated from many South American countries and, although I realize it is as varied as the U.S., I wouldn't be apprehensive to visit much of it.

Maybe ignorance truly is bliss.

Yes, Faina, and seashells also make lovely jewelry and lampshades. :-))

Well I'd never take another Inner Passage cruise to Alaska again. it was the most boring thing ever!! For 6 days we saw evergreens, evergreens, and more evergreens. Then we saw a couple dinky towns with scads of jewelry stores owned by the cruise companies. Most of the off-ship excursions were high dollar.

I know - many saw they loved it!! But once you mention how boring it can be you get their true thoughts on the subject.

tcreath Nov 10th, 2007 07:21 AM

JRP, you shouldn't let preconceived notions of Eastern Europe stop you from visiting. The countries I have been to (6 of them and counting) and been wonderful, living and just as "colorful" as anywhere in the US or Western Europe. Sure, they were once part of the Iron Curtain but they have come a long way since then.

I hate Gambling and have no desire for Vegas or Foxwoods.

I just hate cities filled with sprawl, so that cancells Dallas, Atlanta, much of San Antonio.

Places I enjoyed, but do not need to go to again, St. Louis, Cincy, Pittsburgh, Cleveland. Memphis, Albany.

Places I will not go back to.
Buffalo, Springfield, MO. Branson, MO. Fort Wayne Indiana.
