JR, I'm seriously curious. If you won't go to the northeast, midwest or southeast United States, to India, Mexico, France, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, or South America, or Antartica, where exactly WILL you go?
|
JRP strikes me as the sort of ABRASIVE generalizer that has no idea how to approach people individually, how to appreciate any culture but his/her very tiny little community, and is -- sadly -- so PROUD of being narrow-minded and intolerant.
I get people being uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings that don't do things "their" way -- I don't get people thinking that's something to brag about. |
Aha -- it fits: Here's JRP's idea of traveling from another thread: "5 miles from home is enough to give me a "fix"."
Also seems to like Las Vegas and proud of being an American taxpayer. Home Sweet Home. |
Eastern Europe. It looks too dark to me.
They have lights now. And as far as not coming to NYC because we are abrasive, good. That means that there is one hotel room and a number of restaurants that are filled with people who do want to be here. |
JRP, we went to Boston in September and loved it - honestly some of the nicest and most helpful people I've ever met. Really witty too - maybe you should give it a chance.

well, if we all like the same places, it would be really crowded there, now wouldn't it!
God help me ! :-) |
Laura said "well, if we all like the same places, it would be really crowded there, now wouldn't it!"
Reminds me of that famous saying by -- whom? -- "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded!" I hate gambling casinos because the noise and lights and cigarette smoke make me want to do something violent. (Yes, this quiet, 72-year old lady!) I also dislike Las Vegas because the casinos are so fake. Except that if people go and think they have had a real Italian experience, or French experience, maybe they will stay away from France and Italy. Trouble is, they go to those countries anyway, and are disappointed because it's not like Vegas. I won't go to outlet malls because I hate shopping and think I have more stuff than I need already. My husband was in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Java when he was a child, and he absolutely won't go anywhere where there is political unrest. Starving almost to death kind of put him off those places. Charnee |
"places you refuse to go to"
hell in a handbasket i'll make it on my own two feet thankyouverymuch! |
charnee - you go girl!
|
Wow, I am surprised at the number of people to cite "Mexico" is a place they never want to return to/go to --
Personally, I can't really think of anyplace, okay, I could live without ever seeing (again) Gary, Indiana. |
"Eastern Europe. It looks too dark to me.
L.A., it's another world. I have friends relocated from many South American countries and, although I realize it is as varied as the U.S., I wouldn't be apprehensive to visit much of it. Maybe ignorance truly is bliss." Your last sentence pretty much summarized you. At least you realize that it's the ignorance that's creating these assumptions and opinions for you. Btw, how can Eastern Europe "look" like anything to you if you've never seen any country or city there? |
Las Vegas, Nevada.
I am a European, and when I visited Las Vegas for the first time in 1987, I liked it very much. When I came back in 2006, I was shocked. The town has extremeley deteriorated. |
Love the replies that say the Midwest puts them into a coma. We like it here, in Minneapolis, where we live very nicely, thank you with a relatively low cost of living. We raise our families with excellent education and health care, and then spend our extra money visiting the great places in the world. Our sons have been to most of the great cities and parks in the US, and Japan, Thailand, Korea, all over Europe and the UK, all over Caribbean, Mexico, etc., etc. Turkey, Greece, etc. There is really NOWHERE that I didn't like except St. Maarten for a stupid reason - our house rental had "fat mirrors", and there was no fresh produce on the island.
If we lived in the non-coma producing areas which we love like San Diego, we never could have afforded to see as much - proverb - live cheap and travel. |
Places I have been to and never going back: Las Vegas, New Orleans, Hawaii.
France (with the exception of Normandy, which I don't consider to be France anyway) However there is one place that tops this list and that is IRELAND. We went there two years ago ago and I haven't even looked at the pictures. Places I have never been to and never want to go: Communist China, Communist Cuba, Russia, Mexico. |
I'm from New Orleans, and I can understand why many of you would not return. It's much worse after Katerina but we do need your vacation money. Come at least for the excellent food.
Tibet, I would not return! Major altitude sickness, DIRTY everything, and yak meat, yak butter, yak tea, yak blankets, yak, yak, yak you can keep the yaks. They have water, you would think they could make yak soap. |
Southeastern:
We have spent last Christmas in New Orleans and we LOVED it!!! The Concert in Preservation Hall was very special - one of the most atmospheric Christmas celebrations we have ever been to. We also loved the stylish way of living in New Orleans; right on Christmas Day we walked through the French Quarter and had a chat with some of the residents there - most respectable people (especially in Ursuline Ave.). We also liked the food - whether it was casual like Acme Oyster House, or traditional like Tujague's or fancy like Commander's Palace. |
I have another one. Baltimore. I live in the Baltimore/DC area and Baltimore is trashed out. I avoid it at all costs. Yes, the inner harbor is nice and Fort Mchenry, really the only real thing to see, is nice. But, venture any distance from the inner harbor or outside the gates of Fort Mchenry, dumpy row-houses everywhere. I like Washington DC a lot better. More of it is kept up except for the Southeast area of DC. But, it is a world-class place and is more interested.

What is wrong with IRELAND? I have heard many wonderful things about Ireland, and would love to go there. I would not go back to Branson, MO. We were supposed to stay there for one week, and we actually left a day early! We have never done that before. We did go to see Andy Williams, who is over 80!, but he actually put on a a very good Xmas show. But any other show there? Never. |

I too would like to know why you disliked Ireland. Seriously, even though it was misty a lot of the time we were there, we had a blast! The scenery was beautiful, all those stone fences, so different then anything we had expenienced anyplace eles. |
