Pizza in Philly

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with much of Philly, but a few months ago we passed thru the NW part of town and my husband stopped at his fave pizza place called Nino's. We had a "tomato pie" - it was no cheese, but lots of sweet tasting tomato sauce and TONS of garlic. One of the best pizzas I've ever had (and we grew up in NJ) and I usually make my own pizza, homemade dough.

By far, the best pizza I have ever eaten in Philly (and I lived there many years) is at Mama Palma's on 23rd and Spruce (could be 24th and Spruce, but I think it's 23rd). It has won many awards for best pizza in Philadelphia. They use a wood fired oven (you will also find many good pizza parlors in Philly using coal burning ovens).
Mama Palma's is very popular with the Rittenhouse/Fitler squares residents. You can eat there (I think it's BYOB, but not sure) or get the pizza to take away.

The most famous, and arguably the best, pizza in Philadelphia can be found at Taconellis. This place is so popular that you often have to call ahead to "reserve your dough."
Aside from that location, you might also try Franzones, just outside of Phila. in nearby Norristown.
Either way, you can't go wrong.

In my opinion, and in the opinion of all our friends and relatives, the very best pizza is at Tacconelli's, which is at 2604 Somerset St.
Our favorite is the white pizza with garlic and spinach.
It is a thin-crusted pizza, if that is your preference.
We have eaten pizza all over the world and it still hasn't equaled Tacconelli's! Worth the phone call ahead.
