a lot of turns, steep hill mostly paved, some dirt, burning brakes (down), cold wind on top, and a hefty fee.

The trip was scary enough in a car.We experienced altitude sickness. My hubby and I were so dizzy and 2 childen vomitted the wole way back down. The stop you to chek your brakes to seeif they are too hot to proceed back down.It is very windy and you meet yourself coming on the swtichbacks. It is a hefty fee to be towed off the side of the road if you break down.It would be a better choice to take the tram or some other tour with some else driving so you could enjoy the scenery. You need plenty of gas-it looks a lot closer than it is.The altitude can really cause havoc with your engine. Seriously think about driving a motorcycle up Pikes Peak! I know from experience now to take the tram and enjoy-don`t be too mucho--

I don't think the road is worse than any other high peak road, as Mt. Evans. Just try to downshift rather than using your brakes. Guess someone in the the back seat of a car could get pretty carsick. You can lessen potential altitude sickness by drinking lots and lots of water for two days before you take the road to the top. You'll feel lightheaded at the top no matter what preparation you make. Reducing altitude will reduce altitude sickness.
