DonT—My pleasure.

I live on the North Shore and decided to take 1A home from Logan once just for kicks. Never again! It took twice as long as either of those other routes because it winds its way along the coast at 35 mph for a good part of the way.

Does it hug the coast, with nice views? Sounds fine to me!

Clark, unfortunately it doesn't really hug the coast (except for maybe a little bit in Revere and Lynn, which are hardly scenic and in fact can be kind of gritty).

Once you get through Beverly to Wenham it becomes more small-town and rural, and parts of it are quite picturesque between there and Newburyport.

If you cross from Newburyport into Salisbury, though, it hugs the coast all the way to Portsmouth, NH (when it crosses the border it becomes NH 1A).

"Does it hug the coast with nice views" - unlike the west coast, New England does not have any real roads that have nice coastal views, except perhaps fast glimpses of the ocean. Not sure what poster above is referring to - there are some areas where you drive thru salt marshes, but not any road I know of that is not bumper-to-bumper fried dough shops and traffic lights. Coastal roads that I know of are really beach access roads rather than roads one would use for getting from Point A to Point B.

Leaving Logan, follow signs to I93 North - well marked, easy and highway all the way. You will go thru the tunnel under the Harbor (I always forget whether it is called Callahan or Sumner in that direction) and emerge near Zakim bridge. From I93 you can easily connect to Route 1 North to Maine, or if going more inland to I95 North. If you pick this route, any GPS can give you a good route - as long as you ignore it until you get thru the tunnel.

Forget 1A to Route 1 - there are multiple rotaries (roundabouts), lots of decisions to make and infuriating traffic. I almost guarantee you will get lost and call anyone who suggested that route really bad names.

Thanks, all, for sharing your advice and expertise. My friend likes the idea of picking me up at the airport, so we'll plan on that and continue creating our itinerary from there.

If you are checking luggage, build enough time in for that. Logan has some of the longest touchdown-luggage on carousel time that I have experienced anywhere.
