My husband and I currently have a four day trip planned to Phoenix (actually Scottsdale) beginning May 8 of next year. Will it be too hot already for golfing, laying by the pool, etc.? It's been suggested to me that I shoudl try and change it to early April.

It's not consistent at that time in May. Sometimes early May is still OK. Golf should be fine as long as it's in the morning. Mornings and evenings are lovely in the desert even in the summer. Sometimes early April is hot, too.

Early May is usually a great time to go to PHX. March is the transition month from winter to spring and there are usually quite a few cool and overcast days then. In mid-April the warm weather starts to become dependable, but the average high for the month is still only 84, which is very pleasant when the humidity is low. Early May is usually like the best part of April, and by late May the 100 degree days are arriving regularly. I wouldn't recommend changing your plans.

Perhaps it was an anomaly, but I was in Scottsdale the first week of May this year and almost every day was in the triple digits. It did cool down nicely in the early evening, so I was able to enjoy outdoor activities in the morning and evening, but the sun was too strong to be out long in late morning and afternoon. Also, if you go north an hour or two for day trips temperatures do drop 10-15 degrees. Again, it may have been an anomaly, but if I went back again I'd shoot for early April.

According to data collated by climatologists at Arizona State University going back 100 years, the first 100 degree day in Phoenix is typically May 14th.
There was less than one 100 degree day per April over this time period.
By June most days exceed 100 degrees.
