I'd like to mention that the U.S. Humane Society's Disaster Response Unit is on their way (I believe they left yesterday) to begun a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. They are accepting donations.
Mercy Corps has partnered with Episcopal Relief to provide emergency supplies to the survivors. They were one of the first responders to help with relief efforts following the tsunami, and also Hurricanes Andrew and Ivan, etc. They are also accepting donations.

I think we should trust in the generosity of Fodorites, rather than keeping track of donations.

Maybe someone who can *cut and paste* (not I ) would post this on some of the other boards.

I also suggest that we send donation information to all of our email pals.

Discussion boards and the power of email will generate more funds than we can possibly imagine...I HOPE !

On TV they showed a vehicle from what I believe was a shelter leaving NO with animals.. What will happen if the animals are found they will be brought to shelters in other states. There are many organizations who rescue from"kill" and overcrowded shelters animals and I'm wondering if they have become involved.. If it was a family pet they might have been microchipped.. We have just had our beloved little dog microchipped so if she is ever lost they will be able to find us or our friends..

Thanks for this information. I was glad to be able to make a donation for the animals. I can't imagine having to go through a disaster like this, and to also face leaving behind a beloved pet.

Another good organization for donations is the Humane Society of the United States, already hard at work rescuing animals.

My budget is horribly tight this month, but the guilt was killing me, so I just added $25 to the thread total.

There's 6 pages of inexpensive things they need, can be purchased thru Amazon, and will be delivered to Best Friends. I haven't read all the details but I'd think anything you purchased would be a tax deduction as well.

The plight of ALL living things in NOLA breaks my heart. I spent summers there in Metarie at my grandfather's home and playing on the levee which was only 6 houses away. We have cousins still there and trapped but fortunately dry and, so far, safe. NOLA folk are hearty and headstrong which can be both a blessing and a curse. God willing, in another day or two the cousins will realize they need to load up and leave for a while.

NOLA will learn, survive, and come back stronger than ever...in time. I humbly add my prayers to all those here on the various Fodor forums for our loved ones, human and animal, who are experiencing such hardship.

Thanks for the link llrpurch. I was going to donate anyway, but it's almost more fun to pick out "goodies" for the animals than to just give cash.

I love Amazon, and I think it's a great setup. Some of the other organizations might think about setting up wish lists as well.

I'm happy that I am not the only one worried about all the pets effected by Katrina. I could never leave my pets behind (3 cats and a dog).

I live in St. Louis and donate to the Missouri Humane Society on a regular basis. Because of this I am on their mailing list, and just this morning I received an e-mail stating that their Disaster Response Team is heading south to Jackson, MS where they will partner with national and local animal welfare organizations to rescue animals in disress as a result of Hurricane.

I'm not sure which national group that he's a part of, but a local vet in my western Nebraska town left today as part of a animal rescue team on the Gulf Coast. They are actively seeking foster parents for abandoned birds, dogs and cats that were left behind. As soon as I know more info, I'll post it.

I can't imagine leaving my precious pets behind...my heart bleeds for the people who had to do this very thing. Then I think of people who are can't find parents, children, spouses...it's just too much. Absolutely heartbreaking. Prayer and $$ are so important right now!!

Thank you for posting this message. I always think about pets left behind in disasters. Already made a donation to Red Cross, but still wanted to do something for the animals. Best Friends seems to be perfect. 100% of the donation will go to help.
