Patrick .... Re Pop-ups

Hi Patrick,
How did you finally resolve the issue of the Pop-ups? Those darn Marriott things have suddenly started infesting my threads, too. Didn't touch a thing. Swear it! And, swearing at these, too LOL.
Cheers

Funny you ask. I did download Firefox and when I used it there was no popup on Fodors at all. But on the other hand I do get a few popups on other sites with Firefox, something I've never had with IE and my popup stopper. What's more the popups I get with Firefox have "Mozilla Firefox" right on the header of the popup so they must actually come from them?
Meanwhile, although I never heard from the editors here, after a couple days, someone who also got the slow Delta popup mentioned it was gone. Sure enough when I went back and logged on with IE there were no longer any of those annoying Delta popups.

Meanwhile I've decided that while there are a couple of nice touches with Firefox, I like IE better, particularly for Fodors as it doesn't take me back to the first post every time I look at or post on a thread.

Patrick, are these darned spreading Marriott ads the same thing you were getting with Delta? If your cursor, in the course of scrolling, accidentally wanders over the ad, the da*ned thing spreads out across the text you are reading. Does something that annoying make you want to sleep with them, ever?? LOL

I've seen a Hyatt ad over there this morning too but so far, try as I might, I can't get it to spread like the Marriott ad. Maybe they recognize me. LOL Are there more? What a pain.

OO, I continue to be amazed at how many of us see so many different types of ads here. I have no idea what you're talking about with a "spreading Marriott" ad. Meanwhile, I have noticed that those side ads and the one in the upper header seem to all be for Hyatt and American Express, while they were all for Delta a few weeks ago. I do think I've seen a side ad for Marriott as well, but those are all easy to ignore. Perhaps Delta pulled all their advertising here and that's why the Delta popup is now gone?

And Scarlett, why should I get a Mac? As I've said I get NO popups. One annoying Delta one that I figured out how to avoid in a period of two or three years is hardly reason to run out and buy a new computer!

It is odd how they spread the wealth amongst us. I get Marriott and Continental ads. If your cursor somehow moves onto the Marriott add unintentionally, even if you don't click it, the entire ad blossoms out and spills over onto the text here, obliterating what you are reading. Continental and Hyatt, so far anyway, are static, staying off to the side where they are (barely) tolerable. Leave it to Marriott to be in your face. LOL Just kidding folks, just kidding.

Since posting earlier today, I have noticed some side ads being Continental also. I ignore those which is easy to do. But I still don't know what that moving Marriott thing is.

Ah HA. I posted that last message and what do you suppose appeared in the side? The Marriott ad. I guess maybe it has been there before. I see what you mean. If you run your cursor over it, it will expand. I just had never done that, but did so just to check it out. But it doesn't bother me, as I'm not sure why I'd run my cursor over it accidentally.

Believe me, it's an accident. My cursor is often on the right side of the page anyway, probably moved there by me subconsciously to get it out of the way of text I'm reading, so then as I scroll down, I'm in danger of hitting the land mines planted on the side. LOL It is irritating, if you have no intention of reading it...sort of like those TV ads where Bob Whatshisface, yells about OxyGreen or whatever he's selling. Lawsy, it's so annoying and he's so obnoxious I'd never buy the product!! Likewise with Marriott's ad. Is this what Delta's did or was that different? I never did see that one.

gEEZ fuzzball, you seem to have some sort of hardon for Patrick. Heck, he didn't start the thread.

Your posts (you may claim to be new, but you do realize that one can see all the posts a user has made, right?) haven't exactly showered readers with any gems of knowledge either, have they?

The only thing I use:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
seems to protect both IE & Foxfire.

I also use text-only LYNX browser that accepts NOTHING.

I get pop-ups like clockwork every morning. I don't mind them, and making them go away is kinda fun.

I don't know why, but my Marriott ad stays put. No covering the page when I place the cursor over it.

The Marriott ad is definitely different from the Delta one.
It tended to pop-up repeatedly while attempting to post, and the ones I got were not 'off to the side'.

Dagnabit, ever since Patrick complained about the vicious Delta ad, I have been noticing my Fodor site ads, instead of ignoring them. At first there was a Cadillac SRX ad and an American Express ad, but now the latter has been replaced with Hertz. No floating or expanding.

I think some arcane algorithm decides which Fodor advertiser gets your eyeballs for a week or two and than you are stuck with the choice for good or ill. Until some other ad replaces it. That would explain the disappearance of Patrick's Delta monster.

I wonder if Patrick's rejection of the Delta ad was the last straw. They're bankrupt now!

Thanks everyone. I get Hertz as well, but it's not as invasive. My IT nephew's coming for lunch today so will get him to have a look at it for me. No such thing as a "free lunch" here!
