For larger wineries, we visit Vina Robles and J. Lohr. We stay at budget places, such as Best Western Black Oak

Not sure of your price point.

Ha - last time we went to the Mid-State Fair (across the street), we stayed next door at the Motel 6 - now THAT is a budget property!!
vr22, the Best Western looks quite nice from the outside, as does the Paso Robles Inn.

I live here and this is what I would recommend:
La Bellasera or Hampton Inn just off Hwy 46 West. Then I would go to these wineries:
Niner
Halter Ranch
Tablas Creek
Calcareous
Dinner would be at Thomas Hill Organics, Roberts, or Artisan.
The wineries off the Hwy 46 East are fine but it is not as scenic there as it is on the west side, and Vineyard Drive is not to be missed.
