Parking in Madison Downtown
We are arriving 4th July weekend and staying in the Sheraton. Got a deal thru priceline. However, we found out that it was 2 miles away from Downtwn Madison. We were hoping to stay closer to downtown so that we could walk around State St.
Anyways, since we will have to drive, any suggestions on parking?
Thanks

as bad a street-parking town as Madison is, I have never had a problem getting a spot in the ramps around State St. The ramp on Park St. is probably the most crowded, but the ramps closer to the capital building are never full. even during football games/concerts/etc. you should be able to find a spot. just follow the parking signs.

by the way, the major fireworks event in Madison, the "rhythms and booms" is on the 2nd this year. it is located at warner park which is on the opposite side of Lake Mendota from State St.
by the way, you can also park at any of the campus buildings on Sundays. The following is a link to the parking ramps around the capital:

the overture center ramp is usually my ramp of choice.

I would maybe bring your bikes, the Capital City bike path goes from the Sheraton to downtown along the lake shore.
Definitely go to Rhythm and Booms the Madison Symphony Orchestra is playing this year, it is similar to Pops does the Fourth if you have ever seen that. (Traffic is a nightmare) Try to take a shuttle (mymetrobus.com).
Parking is plentiful in Downtown ramps in Madison

I am another one who, since the 70's, has always used the Lake Street Ramp, next to the McDonalds. Have always been able to find a spot there (except to get a spot on hockey game nights have to get there early - but you don't have to worry about that in July). Good for walking State Street or going over to the Memorial Union, or the bookstore. There are also more ramps a few blocks away towards the dorms, off Johnson, Dayton Streets.
On the other end of State street by the Square, I have always been able to find street parking with in 2-4 blocks even on Farmers Market Saturdays, but there are also ramps available in that area.

There are a number of ramps if you go around the "outer ring" of the Square (the street that goes directly around the Capitol building is on the Square the "outer ring" is one block away from the Capitol building). I don't think you'll have any trouble finding parking.
If you happen to be here on a Wednesday, there's a free concert on the Capitol lawn performed by the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Fun event to picnic at.
