Park City and Deer Valley questions

Hi all. We're heading to Park City this weekend and the predicted lows are in the Negatives and the highs sound like Lows!

Does either Deer Valley or Park City have enclosed gondolas?

We are used to skiing a Poconos resort with the slooowwest lifts. On cold days you are totally freezing by the end of the lift ride.

Tell me it won't be that bad in UT!

Just got back Sunday and DV had beautiful weather for the first time in weeks. I heard from the staff that the prior weeks when it was super cold, it was not pleasant...so better be prepared to dress in 3-4 layers.

Deer Valley does have a gondola on one of the mountains near the Jordanair reservoir but that is only one portion of the mountain..mostly blues/blacks. Good news is that most of the other lifts are pretty fast, express lifts.

You will have a great time...they got some snow this morning. Enjoy it..don't worry about the temps too much..just be prepared to take breaks to warm up

Karens,

Don't worry! Our cold days never feel as cold as the east. Thank the low humidity.

We got a little new snow (thank God!) this morning and should have some more tomorrow. We are not having a good snow year so far....

I've never been there when it was that cold, but most of the lifts are high-speed quads or other high-speed lifts.

I've only skied in single digits a couple of times in Colorado and I'm from Georgia, so I am certainly not used to it. My strategies included: I had several layers to start (I did go back to car one day to drop off some clothes midday). I had a down jacket but that was just too warm with the exercise.
I had a neck gaitor or face mask to make sure I had no exposed skin.
I had the little warming packets for gloves and boots, but used them sparingly.
I made sure the ski boots were warm (not left in car overnight) for the start.
We avoided the most open and high lifts when the wind was up or the sun blocked.
Took more hot chocolate breaks than usual!

Don't worry, the hills and snow in PC and DV are so much better than the Poconos you won't notice the chill. Plus the amenities at DV also make it more comfy.

Seriously, though, the lifts are great at DV and very good at Park. I'd avoid Alta during this stretch but Snowbird also has the tram (not to mention better runs and snow than DV or PC).

We just returned from Park City. Deer Valley was very nice. It was 19 or 20 degrees but as long as you are bundled up, you'll be fine. Additionally, Deer Valley has boot warmers in their lodges. Start out warming them up at the basket and locker room and then warmed them again at noon at Silver Lake Lodge. Very nice.

My husband wears a beanie under his helmet and did not pull it down far enough to meet his goggles. He got an extreme 'brain freeze' where that tiny bit of skin was showing. Had to stop and fix it. lol

Many thanks, all. Your advice was right on.

We just got back - Utah is GREAT!

The first day (Fri.) the high was about 16, and truly, I did not find it that cold. Last Feb. we were in the Poconos and it was windy and a high of 16 and I was so cold and miserable. It didn't feel anywhere near that uncomfortable.

We would like to go back next year. I know that Utah gets a lot of snow in March - we found amounts fine, even though I know it hasn't been a particularly snowy winter so far.

Is the first week of Feb. typically a "safe" time to expect good skiing?

We just couldn't believe how great the skiing was, and how nice Park City and Deer Valley were.

You all who can ski in this type of place more often are really fortunate!

Hi karens,

So glad you had a good time! Yes, it's a really thin snow year which is very unusual, but normally Feb skiing is great with lots of powder.

Skiing in UT is wonderful, but living here is even better!
