Panhandle trip
We will be travelling to Tallahassee this summer to bring our sun to music camp at the university. We have never been to this part of Florida and are wondering what to do in the area. We have five days so we thought we might go to the beaches if possible or another idea was to go up to Georgia. I read that Thomasville was an interesting area. We have done lots of beach resorts but if it something special that might be worth a try. There are four of us, two are teenagers. We generally like off the beaten path and not so touristy destinations, if possible!
Thank you

A really great off-the-beaten path place to go, not too far south of Tallahassee, is Wakulla Springs. It's one of the biggest springs in the country, with a central outflow basin about 80 feet deep -- crystal clear so you can see the bottom as if it were 10 feet away. This is where some of the old Tarzan movies were filmed. Now you can swim in the springs, take glass-bottom boat trips, or just enjoy the area around the old lodge. The Wakulla Springs lodge is a wonderful place to stay if you want to spend a few nights there. Breakfast can't be beat.
Thomasville is a nice town with a neat looking downtown area, but there aren't a whole lot of other things to see there. However, google the town name and see what else comes up.
The old town of Apalachicola could be interesting but is farther away. Also, west of Tallahassee is a great park on beautiful Lake Talquin.
In Tallahassee itself, there is usually a lot going on at FSU, such as art shows, concerts, athletic events, and the like.
Not far northeast of Tallahassee just inside the Florida line is the cute little hilltop town of Monticello, with its historic courthouse dominating the town from the top of the hill.
Farther south of Wakulla you will get to the beach area, starting at Panacea and going farther southwest to St Terese and other more distant beach towns with typical small town beach atmosphere.
Others have mentioned the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, but that's still farther away -- yet easily a day trip.
Enough ideas for now. Others will have more suggestions.
Good luck.

Agree with everything Wayne said.
In Thomasville:

Wakulla Springs:

A night or two at The Beaches of South Walton would be fun. There are no prettier beaches in the state. They are about 2 1/2 hours away between Panama City Beach and Destin on highway 30A. If money is no object stay here: http://www.watercolorresort.com/ It is fabulous!

Seaside is particularly interesting http://www.seasidefl.com/ The Jim Carrey movie, The Truman Show was filmed here.
If I think of anything else, I will post again.

Wild Adventures Theme park is in Valdosta, GA. ( almost 2 hours away ). I know you said not too touristy, but everyone I know who's been enjoyed it. It would fit the bill for teens.
But, I choose Destin & Seaside, FL like Sunshinesue recommends.
