You didn't indicate when you are going. Palm Springs can get very hot in the summer and some attractions may not operate during that time. There is a tram that takes you to the top of the mountain for a spectacular view of the entire valley. Also on Thursday evenings they close the main street and have a festival with all sorts of arts and crafts. A day trip to Joshua Tree National forest is well worth it.The casinos are a welcome air conditioned place to spend the hot afternoons indoors. If you feel adventurous,it's a two hour drive to the Los Angeles area which has many places of interest.Just be warned that the traffic can be a nightmare there.

Miky:
Are you sure the Lawrence Welk Resort is in Palm Springs? I thought it was closer to San Diego?
Anyway, both Larry and Sarah provided excellent responses.
The only thing I can add is to avoid Muriel's Supper Club in downtown Palm Springs!!! I was out there 2 months ago, and couldn't believe what an incredible rip-offf it is. It's one of these "nouvelle cuisine"-type places (I didn't think they were around anymore!). I paid $26 (excluding tip) for the "duck," which turned out to be about 5 silver dollar-sized pieces of duck breast. Everyone in our party left tapped for cash and hungry. We ended up going to a really great Jewish deli to get a real meal!
Have a GREAT time!

There are two Welk resorts--one in Palm Springs called the Desert Oasis and another of I 15 up near Escondido. Palm Springs is a place where elderly people from L.A. retire, play golf and tennis. If you're coming in the summer it'll be too hot to do much of anything at midday. It's the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway that the other poster recommended. It goes to the top of Mt. San Jacinto and is quite nice. You could also do a daytrip over to San Diego and there's a great discount mall at Cabazon off the 10 freeway.
