Packing....Jackson Hole

We are two adults leaving for Jackson Hole 8/27 for 8 days. Staying at Inn [not in the parks]. Activites include wildlife safari tour, float trip and touring Grand Teton Nat'l Park and hopefully Yellowstone. Also know layers to be key, but extended forecast suggests temps 47 to 82. Should we pack jeans/sweaters/turtlenecks, and also include shorts, tee shirts, etc.? Also know casual is 'key' but what are the essentials for this time of year other than goretex jackets? All suggestions appreciated.

The float trip we went on in Grand Tetons park provided rain proof poncho's which we had to use. The best advice for float trips is to do them in the morning because it often rains in the afternoon. We went last Labor Day for a week and wore everything from shorts to coat and sweaters so be prepared. A couple of travel umbrellas would also be wise.

Answer: YEP !!! From this time of year on, you can get anything from uncomfortably hot days, to SNOW flurries, and anything in between. I would plan for the temp range you have suggested and also plan on potentially being wet. As you say, layering is KEY. In the mountains, you'll almost definitely be chilly in the morning, then rather warm if not hot in the afternoon, then chilly again in the evening.

The good thing is that barring any nasty weather moving in, you are going at just about the best time of year. The potential for the best weather out there occurs in the late summer and into fall (Sept/Oct). Good choice !!! Good luck !!!

Everything Mike and Dave have said is right on the mark. In one day, you can go from wearing gloves early in the morning to shorts in the afternoon. We did!

Hi Elaine, We are also going out there about the same time. Sep 1-10. We'll be at Signal Mt Lodge, Old Faithful Inn, and then to Best Western in W. Yellowstone. Where are you staying? Also had a delimna with packing. Just going to pack "everything". Jack
