Okay, three nights in Cannon Beach booked. On to Bend area, assuming that makes logistic sense?

Trying to finesse some details for Newberg - best way to drive there from Portland?

We'll have the better part of the day and can't check in until after 4 pm. Looks like the most straightforward way is via the dreaded 99W, but we'd prefer something more scenic if possible.

Someone mentioned cutting over at Wilsonville or Sherwood, then getting on I-5 - but I'm not sure if they were referring specifically to the drive from downtown Portland to Newberg?

Any suggestions for a nice winery lunch somewhere between Portland and Newberg?

Would also love to hear any restaurant recommendations for Newberg, Dundee, Carlton, McMinnville. The Painted Lady just looks a little too posh for the likes of us.

I did note the Dundee Bistro mentioned above.

Yeah, Dundee Bistro is nice, and probably our fave wine country lunch spot. Babica Hen is a little downscale from there, but we've enjoyed it too.

Choices in Carlton are generally limited to Horse Radish and Cuvee, which has limited hours.

In McMinnville we like Nick's and Thistle. We don't often stop for a meal in Newberg, so nothing besides Painted Lady to personally recommend, but I've read/heard good things about Subterra.

If you're asking about a winery that serves lunch.... Used to be one in Carlton, but I don't know of any these days other than a couple south of Salem.

Yes, you'll want to take a route other than 99W from Portland to wine country. I-5 south to Wilsonville, then Wilsonville Rd. west into Newberg is a good alternative.

I think this is finally coming together.

Our proposed route is Portland-Newberg-Cannon Beach-Bend-Walla-Walla-Hood River-Portland. With a side trip to Joseph from Walla Walla.

We realize that it makes more sense to go to Cannon Beach first, as that shortens the drive to Bend by one hour, but I'll have to see if its possible to re-arrange our stay in Newberg before I can change that.

If we do re-arrange, that will put us in the Willamette Sat-Tue - and I wonder if some wineries, restaurants etc, might be closed on Monday/Tuesday?

We've decided we will include Bend. From Bend, we'll head to Walla Walla. I hate this question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. Is it 'worth' the extra time to go east to Mt Vernon and turn north to Walla Walla, vs just taking what appears to be the faster route on US 97?

Again, thank you all so much for your time and insight. Fodorites Rule!

You will be fine with the wineries and closures. Just check ahead of time which ones you want to visit and see what days they are closed, if any. Some are open 7 days a week and others close for a day. Seufert, one of my favorites, is closed on Tuesdays, for instance.

Mt Vernon? I am guessing that is a typo since that is a small town way north of Seattle.

I see a Mt Vernon off of 26, east of Dayvile and near the junction where 395 heads up north towards Pendelton and Walla Walla?

It's green, whereas the route via 97 looks like it might be flat and dull

I had to look at the map. We have driven past Mt Vernon a bunch, but never paid attention to it, lol. We have done a lot of backpacking outside of John Day. Anyway, it is a toss up IMO. 97 is not entirely flat and dull, but has sweeping views and Shaniko is an interesting place to stop. However, once on 84 headed east after Biggs I don't think it is all that scenic. I know that doesn't give you a clear answer at all. I think I would opt to take 26/395 though because you can visit the Painted Hills along there.

Former NFL QB Drew Bledsoe owns the Doubleback winery near Walla Walla. He chooses to live in Bend.
If you go east on US 26 from Redmond, get your gas in Redmond.
There is a real shortage of gas stations in eastern Oregon.
If you do go to McMinnville, you may want to visit the Evergreen Aviation museum. For an extra $100, you can sit in the cockpit of the "Spruce Goose". Howard Hughes flew it for a little over a mile the only time it flew.

I'm having trouble finding available accommodation in Walla Walla...and I now know why - we'll be there the weekend of the Balloon Stampede.

So, looks like Dayton is the next closest place to stay???
