I got good air to Orlando but want to stay at the beach, what beaches would be a reasonable drive? Like two/three hours the max. Looking for more of a laid back nature experience on a beautiful beach, hiking, chilling out for two adults on a special vacation. We like the Captiva Island type vibe. Traveling early May and would like a beach warm enough for swimming.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Anastasia state park near St. Augustine is 2 hours away from the airport. It's a beautiful beach. I've swum there in May.

Beaches on the gulf will be slightly warmer. Siesta Key is 2 1/2 hours away from the airport. It is near Sarasota.

I can't argue with Anastasia State Park, but would like to offer a nearby alternative, just down the road (SR A1A) 4-5 miles. It is a well kept secret among tourists to Central and NE Florida. I am talking about Crescent Beach http://www.city-data.com/w8/bgm3497.gif

The public access is on A1A about 1 block south of SR 206.

Just a little further than St. Augustine (and about 3 hours from Orlando) is Amelia Island, FL which has all of what you're looking for. Lots of nature trails (Eagan's Creek Greenway, Fort Clinch State Park, etc) plus 13 miles of beautifully preserved public beaches. There's free parking at the beaches and in the adorable historic downtown Fernandina district. Very laid back, it's a beach town but a small town so it's very peaceful.
