We did that last July. It was great. I couldn't believe how empty it was. We drove to Astoria from Portland and made our way down the coast as far as Bandon. The scenery just got better and better, so I was sorry that we had to turn back. But we had reservations at Timberline Lodge, and we also wanted to see the waterfalls at Columbia Gorge. The "Insight Guide to the Pacific Northwest" is terrific about pointing out all the attractions.
The Oregon Coast is gorgeous, and there is a state park every 5 miles or so, so you can get out and walk on the beach and really see the scenery up close. Be sure to take lots of warm clothing. It was really chilly, even in July, and it's always windy at the beach.

hello -- where does a person start when touring oregon? i've lived here over 20 years and i still haven't seen EVERYTHING there is to see!!! -- in my humble opinion, the MOST beautiful part of the oregon coast is from bandon south to the california border, but of course we lived in brookings for 8 years -- the columbia gorge highway east of portland is one of the 10 most scenic highways in america, so of course that is a must -- in the north east corner of oregon are amazing mountains and lakes -- central oregon is high desert, with worldclass rock climbing at smith rock state park -- crater lake national park is in south central -- the amazing and beautiful alvord desert is in the south eastern corner -- astoria, a small city in the northwestern corner is full of history and is several miles from fort clatsop, where lewis and clark spent the winter on their corp of discovery trip -- there are 59 covered bridges scattered around the countryside, mostly on the west side of the cascades -- and speaking of the cascades -- these are beautiful mountain peaks that stick out of nowhere -- near cave junction in southern oregon, you can spend a night in a tree house -- the oregon caves is close by -- if you're near john day, don't miss the fossil beds and the painted hills -- amazing geology!! so take your pick -- i know that i've left some stuff out, like the most beautiful ponderosa trees on the east side of the mountains, and the most beautiful douglas fir trees on the west side on the mountains and also, portland is a most fun city......-- there's LOTS to see and do -- and plan to come back, because 11 days won't be enough to even get a small taste of what oregon has to offer -- please email me if i can be of more help!! gloria

I would add that Crater Lake is worth a trip.
I took the boat trip on the lake, but somehow that was not as impressive as driving around the rim and walking to viewpoints.
Last summer we were in Eastern Oregon. It is a different world. Dry, very dry. The Oregon Trail exhibit at Baker City was interesting.
The area around Sisters and Bend is nice, too.
But most of eastern Oregon is rugged hills and dry.
The coast is a beautiful drive, but drive North!!
Otherwise the sun is in your eyes all day.
And in Portland, don't miss the Rose Gardens. Those are absolutely fabulous.

Last May we visited Oregon and plan on going back. We spent one week in the Mt Hood area and it rained everyday, all day. We than went to the coast and spent a week based in Newport. So much to do and see and it did not rain. We also visited the town of Ashland which was wonderful and not to be missed. Live drama, quaint bed & breakfast, good places to eat and more. It is not far from Crater Lake and the Jet Boat trips on the Rogue River (fun).
