Oregon in May

I have read this site for years. I have received many tips for my trips. This is my first request for help.
My lovely wife needs a week away from Texas. Today I booked 2 tickets to Portland for a week in late May. We are in our early 60s and love the outdoors. We like to hike, sightsee, and brose thru shops. We will stay in a few upscale places and a few chains when we need just a place to sleep. Now I need to plan our itinerary. We'll stay in Portland for a day each way. Where do we stay....the downtown area or other.
What will the weather be like at that time? I've seen several places along the coast that sound nice. We will visit several wineries. I'll be asking more questions as I read more posts on this site. I am open for suggestions / help. Thank you.

Hi
Portland will be a nice change from the weather of Texas in May ( I think)..it will still be cool here and most likely damp.
If you are staying for just one week, I would suggest either staying in town in one of our nice downtown hotels and rent a car for a couple of days..doing day trips.
One could be the Gorge/Falls along the Historic Highway..that is about 45 minutes from town and can be easily done in a day..with plenty of time to get back to the hotel while it is still light and have dinner somewhere nice.
Another day you can drive to the Coast. That would be a 90 minute drive .. almost straight on one highway, again, you can wander the area, and be back to town by dark.
Or you can stay in town for half the time and drive out to the Coast for a couple of nights over.
A lot of hotels have 2-4 night minimums, so you will want to check into that.
The wineries can be done , easily, in a day or less.

My favorite hotel is the Monaco Portland, we are staying there next week before we leave Portland.
The Hotel Vintage Plaza, the Lucia and the Benson are nice.

Some of the other locals, mms and beachbum live in the vicinity of the wineries and they tell me how to get everywhere, (we get lost easily lol) so we will hope they see this and give you some answers)..

You can spend a lot of time in Portland just browsing, shopping, and eating..we have some fabulous gardens and a huge forest, right in Portland.

Hope this helps..

Thanks Scarlett. That is exactly the type of help that I need. We plan on getting out of Portland for a few days too. I will try to put together a rough plan and ask for suggestions based on where I will be. Thanks again. I have learned to value the regular posters on here who take the time to help others.

That was funny OO. We live in Fort Worth and love to visit the Hill Country as we were in Austin many years ago. We are visiting a friend's winery in Lampasas this week end. Grab the hubby and meet us in Oregon. I am beginning to look forward to it as I learn more.

OK, how does this sound..
Fly into PDX, stay in downtown Portland , at the Monaco or one of the other nice hotels for 3 nights. You can take day trips during that time to the Gorge/Falls. You can see the gardens and shop and sightsee in town.
Then drive to the Coast, ( on the way, you can look at the wine area) spending 2 nights there, go to Cannon Beach or 10 miles south on 101 to Arch Cape and stay at the Inn at Arch Cape ( fireplaces, walk to beach) and wander ... coming back to PDX your last day to fly out..or something like that

Hi OO!

Thanks again Scarlett. That sounds like a good start for the first part of the trip. I am actually staying about 9 days. I am thinking about wandering down the coast and staying in the Florence area, going further south along the Rogue River, possibly a night in the Crater Lake area, head north toward Bend, and then return to Portland. I will post a possible iternary later and ask for a critique. Thanks for your valuable suggestions.
