Fooey - lost a post getting this page - which is for the Surfrider Resort - overlooking beautiful Depot Bay - just south of Lincoln City. If you are lucky - you might see some whales from your deck. http://www.surfriderresort.com/

And part of what I consider things to see/do in sunny Portland includes driving/east - out the Gorge (along the mighty Columbia River) - and seeing the 7 waterfalls - including the highest one in Oregon - Multnomah Falls. They have a nice restaurant in the Lodge - with a glass ceiling so you can enjoy the view while dining/taking a break. http://multnomahfallslodge.com/

Just read all the above and if you're coming in August, you won't be "roaring" off anywhere--you'll be in heavy traffic.

Before someone takes that as a downer, I do absolutely love Portland, and actually always find more to do there than I have time for.

I agree with Gail about Mt St. Helen's being totally amazing. It was worth the drive for us and was a highlight of our trip. We stayed at a small coastal village close to Tillamook. We went to Cannon Beach for a couple hours to see Haystack Rock and walk the beach. The town was full of tourists at the time (we were there the week of July 4th) and found quickly we liked the quieter beaches. Portland was a day trip and we loved the ambience of the city. We went to the Saturday Market which was crowded and fun. Lots of arts and crafts. We spent a few hours in Powell's Books. I am from Illinois by the way, so I was very overwhelmed with the beauty of Oregon. Multnomah Falls was a must see (and must climb).

Oregon is on the top of must revisit places for me.
