Only have a few hours in Savannah

My husband and I are traveling by car from Atlanta to Charleston via Savannah. We only have 4-6 hours in the City, what would you suggest? We are arrving from San Diego and have never been east.

I grew up near Savannah and recently took friends there for sight-seeing. Based on that experience, I recommend you go to the visitors' center (it is well marked from I-16). You can't miss it. View their introductory film. Then either rent the driving tape tour or take one of the guided tours. We did the driving tour. It should take a couple of hours and will take you along River Street, around many of the infamous squares and past numerous fantastic buildings. You will have time to tour one of the houses in the historic area as you drive this tour. I don't remember the name of the one we saw, but ask at the visitors' center about the house Sherman used as his headquarters. It is open for tours and I recommend it. I can't suggest a place to eat...actually, I know of plenty, but not within your time constraints...so I will leave that to others who know the downtown area better. Normally I would suggest Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House; however, I don't think you have time to stand in line that long...but the food is incredibly good southern cooking. When you finish the tour, ask a local to direct you to Victory Drive. Drive east along this street just to enjoy the palm tree and azalea lined median strip flanked with beautiful antebellum houses. It is spectacular in the Spring. I just tried to find some Savannah web sites to recommend and found too many to list here. Go to http://www.askjeeves.com/ and type in the word "savannah". That should give you enough links to have a wonderful time in my favorite city.

I have just returned from that part of the world and had a really good time there.
I would also suggest going first ot the visitor centre and then taking a tour with one of the guides. I feel going on foot is better than being chauffered around, even if you are air conditioned! We did a walking tour with a wonderful guide which lasted 2 and a half hours. It cost 19 dollars and included entry to the Davenport House, the first of the many houses in Savannah to be rescued by the famous 7 lunching ladies. I think the tour group is based in Reynolds Square, so use that as a way of finding it.
Charleston too is best explored by foot. They have a good visitor centre too.
