one-night lodging recommendation for MONTEREY, CA ??

hi folks, we'll be in california around labor day weekend. (for our full itinerary, please check out my other thread at http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...nses=9&start=0.)

on our drive from Newport Beach up to SanFran, we plan to stop and stay one night in or near Monterey. any suggestions of where to stay (town OR actual hotel) and what to avoid, and what not to miss?
thanks!

i'm hearing/reading that Carmel may be a better place to stay. is it cheaper, or is it just nicer/better (and more pricey)??

I would stay in Carmel over Monterey. Monterey is nice, but I think you'll enjoy Carmel more. Everything including the Beach is within walking distance. Two places I like are the Coachman's Inn and Candlelight Inn.
Labor Day weekend is crazy around here though. In Carmel it could be very hard to get a place for one night. Carmel usually has a 2 night min. on holiday weekends. Monterey could too for Labor Day. I'd start calling now.

Carmel will be more expensive than Monterey. It is definitely an upscale area.
