One night free in mid coastal Maine region--any suggestions?
My wife and I are flying into Portland and out of Bangor in mid September. We're thinking of 5 nights--2 in Camden(the Maine Stay Inn?) and 3 in Bar Harbor (the Bayview or The Primrose?) but would not mind adding another night if somewhere really nice to go to and stay in the general area between Portland and Bangor. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Experiencing a lakes region might be nice, since your other stays are right on the coast. Sebago Lakes area is close to Portland, might be nice the day that you fly in. Moosehead Lake wouldn't be too far from Bangor airport if your flight isn't too early, but Moosehead is really worth two nights. Spectacular up there in September.
The Lucerne Inn is also fairly close to Portland airport, and there are some nice day drives in the area. It's not really that far from Bar Harbor however so you could just remain in BH and take a day drive.

The Berry Manor Inn - free pie and ice cream 24/7!! And a great inn in a nice little town, Rockland. We spent 2 nights there last summer and loved it. Great innkeepers, lovely rooms and the pie - blueberry, cherry and raspberry.

Acadia National Park is so accessible from Bar Harbor that it shouldn't be missed. check if the free shuttle is still running. Stop at park visitor center for maps, schedules etc.
Rent bikes in Bar Harbor and bike or put them on the shuttle and ride the carriage roads in the park, then go to Jordan Pond for popovers with lunch. There are many short hikes that give excellent vistas and the hike up Cadillac Mt is about 8 miles of easy hiking and wonderful views. [Take good sneakers or hiking shoes]
Freeport ME is just north of Portland and an interesting experience with many other outlets for shopping. 3 hours would be a good time to allow.

Our visits to Maine include a lot of driving to eat lobster at some out of the way place. In mid-September some of the lobster shack type places (dining at picnic tables) will be open weekends only so make a list before you. There's plenty of lobster year round but sitting someplace with a great water view makes lobster taste better.
If your timing is right you might be there when the Common Ground Fair is being held in Unity by the organic farming organization. It's not your typical agricultural fair (no midway). Unity isn't far from Camden.
We always like to explore around Rockland. DH prefers Owls Head Transportation Museum. I prefer the Farnsworth Art Museum. Like the easy short hike to Owls Head Light (great view).
Brunswick is a college town and east of there you can drive out to different points. I particular like the Harpswell area, very rural, and end up with lunch at Dolphin Bay Marina.
Between Bar Harbor and Ellsworth there's the Blue Hill area to explore.
If the weather is warm, we get out our bag chairs and find some good spot for just sitting and watching the water. Maybe doing a little reading and enjoying a snack.
Don't forget binnoculars.

If you miss Moosehead Lake, you will be greatly disappointed. Greenville, Maine has enough to do for 7 days such as Moose Safari (some even guarantee a moose sighting), MANY hiking trails, kayaking, sea plane trips, restored steamboat that goes up the lake, white water rafting, fishing- the list goes on and on. Mountains & a lake 44 miles long provides so much to do and see. Just 1 1/2 hr. from Bangor. A recent article: http://www.kjonline.com/reallife/go-...011-03-12.html
