one day in oahu

Hi,

I'm in Hawaii for a sailing trip (learning to sail) and will be visiting an number of islands. This is my first trip

I have one day at the end of the trip (cos of 11pm flight) in Oahu and was wondering if :
1. There is any place i can store my luggage?
2. How easy is it to get from Waikiki to Diamond Head ? walking or bus
3. Anywhere I shouldn't miss to have a meal ?

Thanks in advance

ML

Rent a car for the day. Conventional wisdom says you shouldn't leave valuables in your car when parked ANYWHERE in Oahu, but I think during the day you are probably pretty safe parking at Diamond Head (you may have to wait to get in as it gets very busy by). There are a lot of other tourists around. Just don't leave extreme valuables like passport, jewelry, wads of cash, etc. in the car and put as much as you can in the trunk.

If you like bold flavors and fine dining, then I always recommend Alan Wongs.

Personally, I wouldn't bother renting a car if I was just going to Waikiki and Diamond Head. When in Waikiki we rent a car to drive to other parts of the island but find driving in/out of Waikiki quite stressful. Therefore we take the bus to destinations close to Waikiki.

It is too far to walk to Diamond Head from Waikiki but the bus is easy (No 22 "The beach bus"), or you could take a taxi. When we were waiting for the bus when we went to Diamond Head, quite a few taxis and stopped and offered a shared trip for $5 each (the bus is $2).

This is just a personal opinion - perhaps you would prefer to drive - but I thought I would give an alternative view.

thanks for the info.

I don't really want to drive (am from the uk and can't remember the last time i drove) so it looks like i'll have to opt for the bus or taxi option.
*sigh* will just have to pack lighter and hope that it won't be to difficult carrying the mini case around

Hi m_l

I am also from the UK! If you have not driven for a while and are not used to driving in American cities then I definitely recommend not driving. The first time we drove in Waikiki it took us about an hour to get to the freeway from our hotel which did not make for a good start!

The bus service is very good in Waikiki. The website has all the details of the routes http://www.thebus.org/

on the luggage front, just an idea, but many hostels have luggage lockers. Perhaps it is worth contacting one in Waikiki and seeing if they would allow you to store your luggage there. I have no idea if they would or not, but perhaps worth a try?

You most certainly will NOT want to be lugging any sort of heavy bag up Diamond Head unless you want a killer workout (and I sure wouldn't want to sit next to you on the plane home!). The bus is good in Oahu. You could simply get a hotel room at worst if you need a place to store your stuff - yeah, the cheaper the better. That's why I recommended a car: free luggage storage.

You should probably try the Honolulu Craigslist to get more specifics about where you might store luggage. I'm sure the locals will have better ideas.
