One day at Cape Cod

I will only have 1 day to spend on the Cape Cod area during vacation unless I can pickup an extra day somewhere. I will be staying at Hyannis and plan to take a whale watching boat at Provincetown, spend 2 hours around Provincetown and eat at the Portuguese Bakery and then drive parts of Highway 6A to see some lighthouses and other sights. What do you suggest for 1 day on Cape Cod?

You pretty much filled up your day already with those plans (the drive will take about an hour each way, depending on the traffic)...which sound just fine for one version of the Cape experience. In my view, the Cape is either the nuttiness and crowds of P-Town, or the quiet beaches, or golf and baseball, and of course sea food. There are plenty of lighthouses on the drive between Chatham and P-Town.

I think you're not getting many replies to your message because, as the other posts states, you've already filled up your one day ( definetely a very full day). The only other thing I can think of is that maybe we're confused and you have another day that you're trying to fill up or that you don't realize that what you've planned IS on Cape Cod.

Okay, I know this is probably going to spark a debate, BUT...I wouldn't recommend going to Provincetown unless you're gay. We didn't realize that it was a primarily gay vacation destination and felt really uncomfortable there. As we overheard a police officer there saying "if you're here, you're queer!" I didn't find the homosexuals there particularly accepting of hetrosexuals either. I guess turnabout is fair play. Just my two cents...

There is a paved bike path. Rent a bike and take a nice ride.

Sorry, but I don't recall where the path terminates, but it was a nice way to spend an afternoon. I believe it was an old railbed.

Just a comment on Provincetown. My husband and I and our children (ages 10-13) went there on a whale watching trip (amazing!!) last August. We had planned to drive straight back to Brewster where we were staying, but ended up visiting Provincetown for the rest of the day. What fun! It's a small town with tiny streets, lots of interesting shops and great people watching. We did see a number of cross-dressers handing out brochures and they were very nice, posed with us for pictures. Our kids are very accepting of all sexual orientations, religions etc. because that's the way we brought them up, so they were very comfortable too.

Did you really ask cross-dressers to pose for pictures with your family? What is THAT all about? "And here is Bunny with a native..."

chatham! i was there last week & took a seal watching tour to monomoy island which was amazing & not too long. (chatham water tours). the food there is great as well. nice laid back town.

sorry you are staying in hyannis. unless you are a kennedy with money to build a wall around yourself, hyannis is not breathtaking nor safe. avoid main street!

p-town is nice & gay, but who cares. the whales are there & so is great art for sale.

the drive from hyannis to p-town is not long mileage-wise, but with the summer crowds & a two lane highway, there will be delays.

I have been to Ptown many times with my family and I think it is a GREAT place to spend the day....lots of little shops, sidewalk cafes, and EVERYONE should go on a whale watch at least once...amazing. We have never found the people with alternative lifestyles to be anything but pleasant and friendly. If you think that you would be uncomfortable around people who are openly gay than Ptown is NOT for you.

I think its hilarious that straight people feel uncomfortable in a gay town. Now I guess you know what it feels like for them anywhere else.

reading responses that nothing to do with actual travel advice is a waste of people's time - please take the banter elsewhere

What we did was take a whale watching trip that left from Barnstable Harbor (20 min. at most from Hyannis). It took 1 hour to get to P-town where the whales are but it takes that much time to drive there as well. We had a great time. Our favorite town to walk through was Chatham by far (although we didn't visit P-town so I can't compare).
