Three weeks and I'm ready to shower in my own shower and sleep in my own bed. But, I have to admit that when we pull up to our lovely abode my heart aches for the road again! Or maybe I just don't want to face all that unread mail and pile of laundry I know I have to do.
I think I am born to travel, but there really is no place like home. But my husband will tell you that only a few days pass before I am planning and researching our next trip. Pack my bags!!

I was thinking about this thread today. I realized that many people post here that they don't seek fancy places to stay -- all they need is a "bed and a roof" over their head. The hole up in a tiny room and live out of a suitcase. Others talk about when they travel everything is bare bones -- no meal splurges, eating as little as possible and never having a special meal. Others mention that they go through all kinds of inconveniences to get where they're going -- perhaps multi plane changes to their destination, taking the worst of possible public transporation with lugging luggage up and down stairs, etc.

There is nothing wrong with any of that -- but if they are giving up all creature comforts when they travel, I'd sure understand how they'd get homesick for the comforts of home. Perhaps I don't get that way, because I travel to be as comfortable traveling as when I'm home.

Sometimes I welcome the familiar scenery, but usually, I am not homesick--no offense to my family, friends, or the large cat I live with.

We get the opposite of homesick we get vacation sick. We used to get homesick when travelling for more than 2 weeks. Now we stay away as long as possible because after being home a few hours we get just as pissed off as before we left and everything is back to BAU. Having your won business has it's pros and cons.

Like you I want to be comfortable when I travel. Consequently I don't travel nearly as much as most Fodorites do. So no doubt that is why I do not get homesick. I get "sick" when I get home and have to unpack, do laundry, go through the mail, return messages etc. But I do enjoy my home so when I do not travel I am quite content.

Annabel, I really like the phrase vacation sick. I love to travel and do it as often as my schedule, and everything else in my life, will allow.
Homesickness? Sure.
I don't travel to just say that I travel here and there, and will suffer any inconvenience to accomplish that goal. I don't cut corners when I travel. I love room service, plush robes in my room and I routinely require my family to unpack when we reach our destination. I splurge more on vacations/holidays than I do at home. I always believe that travel experiences are priceless and should be a treat.
Having been born on an army base and having learned to pack a suitcase before elementary school, and having boarded lots of planes, trains and automobiles in twenty years, I know what it is to have no stationary home until I married. I love to travel, but I love having a home and loved ones (and my 19 year old cat) to be homesick for.

The longest I've been gone is 3 weeks and I haven't been homesick yet.

Patrick - I think I might be the exception to your thought... I usually stay at basic Days Inn or Travelodges, never unpack my suitcase or make my hotel room "homey", and eat simply and casually; and yet I've never been homesick.

I think perhaps that when I travel it reminds me of how life was supposed to turn out - I was supposed to live my life like Nancy Drew: independently wealthy, traveling to exotic places, having someone to do all my housework, etc., and never having to work.

Then I come home and I'm suddenly Hannah Gruen...

I was also a Nancy Drew wannabe, toedtoes!
Of course she was always getting gagged and bound and stuck in trucks, before she solved the crimes!

Ah, but those bound and gag moments were part of the thrill! It's not like she would ever actually get seriously hurt or die.
