Omni Royal Orleans Hotel
I will be spending one night in New Orleans before leaving on a steamboat trip. I noticed that the Royal Orleans in the French Quarter is recommended by Fodors and Mobil Guide. If you have stayed there, I'd be interested in knowing what it was like. Thank you.

The Omni Royal Orleans is my favorite place to stay in New Orleans, and since my husband and I live only a few hours' drive away, we go to N.O. often and have tried a number of the hotels. The rooms are elegant and very comfortable (although some are a bit small), service is excellent, and the atmosphere is wonderful--very Old New Orleans. The location is within easy walking distance of all the great French Quarter restaurants (try the main dining room at Arnaud's, and K-Paul's is less than half a block away), antique shopping on Royal St., beignets at Cafe du Monde, etc.

Dear Susan: I'm a local and haven't actually stayed there (tho' I've had good reports from friends who have stayed). I've gone there often to have drinks and agree that it's really top drawer. If you're trying to find what is universally recognized as the finest hotel in New Orleans, that would be the Windsor Court. Perhaps marginally more expensive than the Royal Orleans and not actually IN the French Quarter (tho' close) and with superb food. I don't think you'll be unhappy with the Royal Orleans though. So welcome to New Orleans and have a great stay! Joan

Stayed at the Royal Orleans two weeks ago, very nice and extremely convenient to all the places you want to see. I second the nomination for Cafe du Monde and the beignets. I would also recommend a restaurant called The Redfish Grille. Very nice, casual dress but great food and service. My opinion, to see and do New Orleans, stay close to Bourbon St and walk everywhere. It's the best way to see as much as possible, especially since your visit will be very short.
