Steve's right--Gorat's has awesome prime Nebraska beef and is down by the now-defunct stockyards in south Omaha. If you want a trendier (also more expensive) restaurant, Omaha Prime in the Old Market area (near downtown) serves excellent beef. If you want a fab restaurant, though, and don't care about steaks, specifically, go to the French Cafe in the Old Market. French food in an unpretentious atmosphere, all wrapped up with excellent service. Trust me, you won't want to leave.

Omaha Prime is the place you want. Gorats is a good steak house, but is not near the old stockyards. Gorats is an old style steak house with a very crowded dining room and it is not that impressive. I find the service average to poor and i would not call it a dining experience. The steak house near the stockyards is Johnny's and is much better than Gorats, but not like Omaha Prime. There are many steak houses in Omaha and ther are many restaurants to choose for. If its still in busines it is usually good as there is so much competition. Omaha Prime is in the old market which is a more quant place with specialty shops, restaurants and bars. I serves only prime beef and the service is usually very good and much like a local Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. If you want a great dining experience. Choose the French Cafe, V Mertz, M's Pub or my favorite, the Flatiron. These are all in the vicinity of the Old Market and serve a continental type fare with daily specials. Enjoy your time in Omaha and try to visit the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Strategic Command Museum, the Western Heritage Museum and Joslyn Art Museum.

Oops, Eric, you're right on Gorat's location. I don't want to tick off Omaha steak traditionalists and was trying to be PC about the whole thing but I really wouldn't recommend either Gorats or Johnny's to a first time Omaha visitor even though the food is good. Wherever you go, order steak that's listed "Black Angus" or "Silver Label"--any of the 'super prime' beef labels and you'll be happy with your steak. Where are you staying, Dan? The Doubletree or Embassy Suites are downtown (ES in Old Market) and are close to the restaurants mentioned (except for Johnny's and Gorats). Enjoy!
