I'v only been there in first 2 weeks of Sept (3 different times in last 6 years.) I hear people say Oct, is VERY unpredictable. Also heard that Denali Park closes late Sept. but am not sure about dates. If I had to miss out seeing Denali Park I would not go!!! I was that impressed...
Hope this helps.....

I agree with Kay.
My husband and I were in Alaska last October 10 - 20 and although we had a wonderful time, we were limited.
Denali closes mid-September so we could only go into the park as far as we could walk - we did come face to face with a wolf however.
We are definately planning to go back but will make sure Denali is open next time.

It can be a wonderful time in Alaska, although I believe the others are right about the shuttle buses in Denali. As with most things about the state, it's hard to generalize - October days can be warm with good fall color around Anchorage, or getting wintry farther north or in the bush; it can be wet (or not) in Southeast; and half the time we had snow on the ground in Anchorage by our son's birthday on Oct. 21. The days start getting short, noticeably so farther north.
But, Alaska comes alive in the fall, as people watch the "termination dust" turn the mountains white, top to bottom; as hunting season culminates with thousands of people trying to smile through moose chili; and as the roads empty out as the tour buses start to hibernate.
A flightseeing trip around Denali (probably cheaper than in mid summer) is an awesome experience in the fall, the glaciers and Kenai Fjords are still breathtaking, and you'll have a better chance of meeting interesting people and seeing the place without its game face on. I'd go for it, but come with flexible plans so you can dodge crummy weather or exploit the frequent sunny, crisp days.

Yea, go for it. Denali is not my favorite. Hours on a school bus was not my idea of fun. The only animals we saw were miles away, we needed powerful lenses to see them. You can't get close to the mountain. The Kenai Fjords, Seward, and just seeing the majestic roughness of Alaska is worth the trip.
