obster, crab and BBQ in Savannah
I forgot to ask on my last post - does anyone have a suggestion where we can find good BBq and crab and lobster in Savannah? We don't mind spending a bit more, be we both like a pretty casual and relaxed atmosphere. I've been reading a lot about restaurants, but no one ever mentions barbeque, isn't it any good there??

Lotty, there are many BBQ places in Savannah, I couldn't recommend any of them as I am not a big fan and I just don't know what is merely good and what is GREAT!. Barnes Restaurant, Johnny Harris and Carey Hilliard all have decent BBQ that suits me just fine. I am sure there are other places.
Johnny Harris is a little less casual than the other two. It's dress up. Now as far as crab and lobster......There are no local lobster. So what you get will be flown in. I am sure that the upscale restaurants in the Historic area will have some.
This is the wrong time of year for local fresh crab. You would get frozen and it just isn't as good. You would find crab dishes at the same restaurants that you would find lobster. The BBQ places I mentioned will also have deviled crab and crab cakes. Perhaps even crab stew.

Thanks Aileen, for this info and for the last post as well. You certainly can see that I have never been to the South before! I've decided you are right about spending our 4 days in Savannah only. Lots to do and see. By the way, you mentioned 'unusually warm day in Dec'.....made me laugh, it's always below freezing and often below zero here in December!

LOL! I can understand your feeling about "unusually warm." We do have December days in the high 70s from time to time. The record high was 83. Usually it's in the high 50s to high 60s. We had a low of 9 one horrid winter. My husband was in the hospital....the parking lot at the hospital was w-a-a-ayy over there and I didn't have the heavy winter clothes or shoes that I needed. The air was very wet like a very fine sleet. And the wind was blowing. I tell you, it was awfully hard to decide if I loved him enough to go to the hospital. I found out there is a limit to how many pairs of socks you can put on and still get your foot in a shoe.

A week ago today we were on our 6th day in Georgia. Aileen was very helpful with many aspects of our trip - thank you. We had a great experience - stayed at the Double Tree on Montgomery and W Bay in Savannah. We at dinner at three river front restaraunts, ate lunch at Vic's there also and ate breakfast on the river front two mornings. Then walked the squares, took Bobby Davis' historical guided tour and he was great and we also took the Sixth Sense Tour late at night. Two Pale Josephines right off MLKB (across from the Firestone Tire Store) has neat clothing for gala's and just funky clothes. We did not find any BBQ in the Historical District but there could be some. We enjoyed the elegant homes and row houses in Savannah. You could just imagine horse drawn carriages dropping off the residents in this part to town in the 1700's! Have fun.

As a Marylander, lotty, I have learned to not order crab when I travel. I could tell stories about eating it in various parts of the country, but will stick to Savannah area this time. Trust me, it is just not the same. In the 'low country' area (I grew up there so I'm not bashing), they usually boil crab so the flavor is entirely different. Stick to bar-b-que (you have been given 3 very good suggestions) and shrimp. Those two, they do WONDERFULLY in Savannah. Carey Hilliards, especially, has wonderful fried shrimp.
