Always enjoy your trip reports, escargot--they are so food-oriented, also a strong interest of mine! My question is about the Acela train. I couldn't seem to find any information on the Amtrack web site. How long does it take? Leaves from Penn Station?

Hi escargot,
We stayed at the Hotel Giraffe in December and liked it very much too. It was nice to come home from a day of walking for miles and have relaxing drinks and nibbles in the lobby. They were also fine with us filling up our wine glasses and taking them up to our room.
The location was a little quiet for my tastes but we like to walk, especially in NY, and it was a nice walk both uptown and downtown.

I'm reading your post backwards, escargot, and just got to the part about Macy's flowers. Many, many years ago I walked into Macy's without realizing it was their 'flower week' or whatever they call it. It was fabulous! The middle sections of all the counter areas were just filled with these enormous fresh flower arrangments! I can't even begin to tell you how fabulous they were and how large -- whatever you're picturing, double it! You really gave me a wonderful memory!

marilyn, I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner, we were back in NYC this weekend and just got home tonight.
Yes, I take the train from Bos or Rte 128 to NY and yes it goes to Penn Station -
I don't know why you can't find the Acela times on Amtrak - when you look at schedules or reservations it should have choices, under the train number, it should say Acela Express or Regional - the Acela takes about 3 hrs. 15 min, the Regional takes about 4hrs. So it really only saves you 45 minutes, wiht just a few stops along the way -
so either train is fine -
this weekend we drove, b/c we had a brunch to go to in CT on the way home.....will think about posting about it tomorrow, but basically the drive in took about 5 hrs and 15 minutes and the ride home ran about 40 min longer b/c of some traffic - you just never know, sometimes I make it in 4 hrs by car, sometimes 3 hrs and 40 min, and sometimes it's 5 hours or more- you just never can tell with traffic, which is why I do like the train/ Acela or regional - and I take the train from Bos or Rte 128 Dedham to NY anywhere from 4-8 times a year and have yet to have a train delay.
HDM - yes oh those flowers were a site !
Next year I want to plan for it.
