NYC shoppers ... need your comments

I am going to NYC Aug. 21st for one week and hope to shop for summerish woman's clothes, will I have any luck ? I know it sounds silly, but I live on a remote Caribbean island and catalog shopping is my only choice, there are no malls in the Virgin Islands. Will I still be able to find things on the sale racks ? I need to refresh my tired, worn out summer clothing. Living in the islands is paradise, except I need to replenish my closet ! I appreciate your hopeful comments.

Lord & Taylor department stores still have some nice summer clothes. Also check out Macy's and the tons of stores throughout Herald Square, 34th Street. Have a great trip!

There won't be much in the way of summer clothes left on the racks but whatever remains will be on sale at every department store and in the speciality stores.

I also agree that you might try Lord & Taylor.

In NYC, the merchandise on display is always six months ahead of the season. There is already a Hallmark store that has Christmas decorations in the window.

You'll find loads of bargains on summer clothes at department stores. They've drastcially reduced what's left of the warm-weather clothes.

Gretchen, I recommend taking a bus from Port Authority to either Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall in Elizabeth, New Jersey or Woodbury Commons in Central Valley, New York...I was recently at both and the stores were packed with summer merchandise...this included Ann Taylor, Gap, Banana Republic, Esprit, Off 5th (Saks Fifth Avenue), J Crew, and that's just to name a few...it's true that the bus ride to Woodbury Commons will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes each way, but you've got alot of stores in one place and there's a food court...Jersey Gardens is closer to the city, so you won't lose alot of touring time...many people will disagree with my suggestion, but given that you reside in an area without malls, I think you would enjoy it.

Woodbury Commons is my favorite day trip from NYC. Takes 55 minutes to get there by bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal and you can shop the entire day. Great facilities...stores, eats, bathrooms. The best prices. If you are a true shopper, you'll love it!

I'm a huge fan of Woodbury Common, but I don't think that Gretchen will find many bargains on summer merchandise there next week.

I was there yesterday...there's plenty of summer merchandise in all the stores and I'm sure it will still be there through Labor Day weekend, which is when they're practically giving it away...although now it's 50% to 70% off.

You could try Forman's, there are several locations around the city. They have great sales and will probably have some summer stuff left at huge discounts by the time you get here. There's one on 42nd street not far from Grand Central on the east side, and another on John Street downtown. I also agree that Lord & Taylor is a best bet, they'll have summer clearance racks to paw through. Good luck and have fun!

I returned from Woodbury Commons just minutes ago with several shopping bags full of summer merchandise because I am going to California, Hawaii, and Fiji next week. There was plenty of stuff to choose from. I bought 2 designer swimsuits at Off 5th along with matching coverups. Ann Taylor had a good selection of summer dresses and skirts and tops. Esprit had alot of things, but I'm in my 30's and alot of their stuff, in my opinion, is too "young" for me. Anyway, you'll still find stuff.

I would hit all the stores in the 34th St area, since I was there yesterday, I can say there is still alot on sale.

Try Boltons, 34th just east of 5th Ave, Macy's has TONS of clothing on sale and Lord and Taylor is not a far walk as well.

I also suggest checking out Conway for inexpensive casual clothing and it's all on sale now too. Some nice T shirts for $4.

On 42nd St from 3rd ave over to Madison AVe are several shops worth looking at there's Conway, Casual Corner, Forman's Ann Taylor, Bolton's, and Banana Republic.

Have a great time while you are here.

TJ Maxx on 6th Ave and 19th Street, Filene's Basement in the same building and Burlington Coat Factory on 6th Ave and I think 22nd. After that, head up to Macy's at Herald Square.

Have Fun!
