I like the Mexican restaurant La Palapa, on St. Mark's Place between 1st and 2nd Aves. It's about 2 blocks from the theater.

What kind of food do you like? There are also some good nearby Indian and Asian restaurants. That's a pretty lively and festive neighborhood for restaurants (the Momofuku restaurants are also all nearby, but they are so popular and busy that I don't know if you could get in even at 10pm unless it's a weeknight).

I also like La Palapa but will also suggest The Smith (casual American) on 3rd avenue, and Cacio e Pepe (Italian) which I think i learned about from right here on Fodors perhaps.

or if you want Korean bbq where you grill your own food over open fire, super cool for kids there's Gyu-Kaku on Cooper Square and you can make a reservation on Opentable.

I love The Smith. Like Stomp. it's VERY LOUD.

The Mermaid Inn is also great, Second Ave near 5th Street. Great lobster roll.

Italian? Lavagna is simply excellet. It's rigatoni is one of the best single dishes in all of NYC. 5th Street near Avenue B.

So many amazing options in the East Village! That's a small start.

this area is swarming with good restaurants both expensive and inexpensive.

my favourite cheap eats in this area that i know are open at least until midnight:
klongs - thai street food 7 st.marks bet 2nd & 3rd
jules - french bistro with jazz bet 1st & 2nd
chickpea - mediterranean on 3rd bet 9th and st.marks
these are frequented by college students.

a pricier place i like is indo chine - vietnamese fusion.
this has a wonderful old world feeling to it.
